When using either the trucks built in navigation or any other mapping we always double check the route. For bridge heights I have found the app AllStays very handy for checking bridge height along our route (mostly when in the mountains) before hitting the road.

Jim,
I've read several reports of people having problems like that with the RV 770. We've had none of these issues with our RV 760, so have stuck with it. Lets hope that, unlike the gene for Huntington's Disease, the 770 mutation will skip a generation and not show up in the 780/785...

Hi Rob,
I would have to agree with @TucsonJim, only the "bad Garmin advice" that I am getting is not from a new Garmin, it is from exactly the same RV760 that used to give me better advice. I regularly update software and maps and yet it will not direct me down perfectly good roads that it used to direct me to and that I know well. I wonder if I have somehow buried "preferences" in the programing somewhere . . . but, can't find where I might have done this.
It is odd that some are getting good advice from their Garmin and some are getting bad advice . . . why is this . It would be interesting to do side-by-side route mapping with different Garmin devices.

We have had an RV 770 for a bit over a year and have no complaints with it. It has not yet taken us on a wierd route. We have travelled cross country and back and I use it locally sometimes just to see what route it wants me to take. It seems to route on the better roads consistently.

Garmin RV 780 vs RV 770
I use the phone app “Sygic” which downloaded all maps for the entire planet so it works flawlessly even with no service.
It has lane guidance, both visual and voice, and real time traffic.
There is a truck/RV version (I don’t have it) that allows you to set custom parameters such as height, width, axles, weight etc.
Mine has a HUD feature where you lay your phone face up on the dash and it projects your Navigation onto your windshield.

A possible alternative is the Truckers Garmin 770. It does not have the bells and whistles of the RV version, no campsites, dump stations or any of that, but what it does have is the ability to dial in your rig size and your speed on the various roads (interstates, 2 lanes, surface streets and the like) and then you can plan your route without fear of those dreaded 10'6" bridge overpasses on your 13'6" rig. It tells you about sharp curves, bad cross winds, truck weigh stations and the like. Good information for driving. It seems we use other apps for finding campgrounds, so the Garmin app isn't that useful for that. And if you need to go to a campground or national park, dial in the address. It'll take you there.
I've used it personally and professionally for a couple of years with better success than the regular Garmin that I had before.

Strange! We’ve been using our Garmin RV760 for three years and close to 50,000 miles, including up to Alaska and back and it has done a fine job. Now I usually build our primary trip routes with Basecamp and bounce them against Google Maps for a sanity check and I have installed a few special POI downloads (overnight places, bridge/overpass heights, etc.). We’ve been happy with it. On our March trip out West. I only built part of the route out and we winged it with just the 760 after that and never had a problem.

The only difference I found was that the new 780 had 3d buildings and terrain. I felt that didn't warrant me spending an extra $100 so I went with the 770. This is the comparison link Garmin sent me.

Hope that helps.
