So the better half just told me to up fuel costs in the trip planner to $6.50/gal US. Maybe not a bad idea. Over $5/gal here at my usual stops. Last fill was $3.79/gal last week.

I'm starting to think the gas prices will peak soon and start to decline. This is based on a growing national outcry by the people. The pressure will hit a breaking point soon.

I hope you're right, but it'll only happen if demand drops considerably or supply increases.

mod edit: removed comments toward one's opinion of US policies.....

I don't see the latter happening inside of 6 months.

I’m seeing $4.69 for diesel and $4.09 for regular unleaded in Pensacola, FL today. (And it’s typically more expensive here than where I’m from in Acworth, GA — although I’m not complaining.)

Mansfield Ohio, we're at $4.099 for regular and $4.999 for diesel . . . so for now we're on track to travel our spring trip of maybe 1500 miles, then a couple short trips of under 250. . . . .

The OP's question is about if travel plans are changing due to the price of fuel. Not about politics, not about opinions of why the price is high, not about oil companies - simply about whether you travel plans are changing.

Try to stay on topic here - please.

I'd just bought my F450 and 349M and wanted to be able to use them for my wife and I to vacation and recreate. I was concerned that if fuel prices went up a lot, being retired I wouldn't be able to afford to travel.

Gosh, I wish I could buy a bunch of diesel and just store it away.

Then I thought about what Southwest Airlines does since (one of?) it's major operating costs is fuel. That airline both stockpiles fuel and buys fuel futures to stabilize costs. Well, I didn't have a way to stockpile diesel (my HOA would be pissed!) so I looked into buying futures.

With a little research, I bought equal amounts of crude future ETFs BNO, DBO, and USL at the end of Jan 2021. I didn't know for sure if they'd correlate with pump prices, but I was pretty sure they'd be the first affected with diminished supplies.

So I kinda built my own hedge fund against diesel prices by buying those ETFs.

They've worked out pretty well. I've banked enough on these to date to carry me for a couple years. I reckon eventually they'll stabilize out and I'll loose my hedge, but right now pump prices don't bother me.

Some experts are talking about $180-200/bbl, so I'm staying invested at the same level while taking profits off the top to fund my fuel account. Worse case, if crude prices drop and I lose some on ETFs, I would hope pump prices would also come down. I don't see that happening for awhile, though. A couple of things that could really mess this up, though, are large increases in fuel taxes or the government starting fuel rationing programs.

Just something to think about if you want to stabilize your fuel costs for going on vacation. It's worked pretty well for me.

(mod edit - not even a hint of politicians or politics is allowed)

This is a great idea. I didn’t do this for fuel, but I bought Mosaic, CF Industries, and Nutrien stock a year ago to offset farm fertilizer inputs going up. Working like a champ. Just wish I had bought more.

Retiring soon from corporate life, so DW and I are leaving once the truck and RV show up, as long as diesel can still be found!!
