    Lake Superior Circle tour

    Greetings members;

    Beginning to plan a Lake Superior Circle Tour for September of 2023. Leaving from Chicago Suburbs and heading north to begin the trip in the UP of Michigan. Heading west and around the lake. Would appreciate any recommendations on campgrounds, attractions, must see/do suggestions, and any other tips from fellow GD owners from the states or Canada. Planning about two weeks for this adventure.

    Thanks in advance for any info you care to share!

    My best advice is to take 3 weeks if you can. There is so much to see on all sides of Superior.

    So, are you saying that you'll end the trip by heading south and crossing back at Sault St. Marie into the US?
    The reason I ask is that I may be able to offer comments.

    Thunder Bay area. Sleeping Giant provincial park is a nice place, but about 15-18 miles off the highway.
    If you want to stay close to Thunder Bay, there is a KOA about ten minutes east of the city along the 11/17 hwy.
    Pancake bay Provincial park is nice and has a great beach...though Lake Superior is a cold water lake for sure. It is close to Sault Ste Marie.
    If you have not been to an Ontario Provincial park, they place power pedestals in the absolutely stupidest locations you can think of. Bring extra power cable.
    On the way up hwy 61 from Duluth to Thunder Bay, there are several CG's in the Lutsen, Grand Marais area that are good. The municipal CG in Grand Marais is very popular. Short walk from your campsite into town.

    Aune-Osborn Campground in Sault Sainte Marie, MI was really nice the last time we were there. I could spend a week just watching the lake boats go by.

    We're doing the same trip in May/June over 24 days because our last stop is the Ont GD Rally. If it wasn't for the rally, it would of been over 3 weeks. Starting from Ottawa/Ontario going counter clockwise crossing back in Ontario at Sault Saint Marie. Sleeping Giant, Michigan and Manitoulin ferrying to Tobermory and the Bruce peninsula is some of the highlights we can't wait to see.

    As @Scott'n'Wendy mentioned, if stopping over night at any of the Ontario Provincial Parks look out for those sites where the power pedestal are far. It's all in the site description of each site. Some are ridiculously far.

    Thanks to all for the information presented. Having been to the UP on several occasions, and spending a year at UW-Superior back in the 70"s, familiar with and have done many of Michigan and Northern Wisconsin attractions. Love the breweries in Marquette. Will travel clockwise from Wisconsin, then back through the UP and return to Chicago area via Green Bay and HWY 43 as we have also done the Door County scene with the Imagine in tow.

    Thanks again for your input and kind consideration of my question. Will continue to monitor for any additional comments.

    We too are planing a trip to MI and Great Lakes. The DW wants to do the Tulip Festival in Holland and tour both the CA and US sides on the Great Lakes on a car trip from the camper back and forth to Niagara Falls.

    We've noticed that the further north you go in MI, and toward Niagara in either MI or CA, full hookup CGs get more expensive, possible RV border crossing issues, more traffic congestion, and more miles on the TV and RV for touring. That's why we are planning on camping in south western MI and traveling by car to do most of our touring in the area.

    The North shore is beautiful. (felt to crappy to type all this yesterday) Some of the highlight we stopped at are : the Sault (Canada side) take the Agawa canyon train into the canyon, makes a nice long day . Pancake Bay (have not stayed there) Lake Superior PP is great with some smaller lake front camping (Rabbit Blanket campground) if you don't have to plug in. Nearby is the town of Wawa has some fun places to buy native goods Take a hike along the Sand river, easy and beautiful falls along the way. Pukaskwa National park and Sleeping Giant PP were our favorite stops. There were spots inland we wanted to see but back when we went the was a massive forest fire so that did not happen. Enjoy !
