    Alamosa to Granby CO

    Greetings,

Planning a trip and planning a leg possibly from Alamosa to Granby. Trip planner wants to take us us 17 to 285, pop on 70 to 9, 40 and 34 in to the campground. I'm sure it is beautiful however concerned about towing. Alternative is back through 25 N to Denver and head west. Anyone have experience with this route?

Check other forums for travel on this route and did not find anything in a quick search. Any help appreciated.

I do not know what you are towing but 17 and 9 can be a pita.

Being as I tow both roads multiple times a year without issues or concerns, am puzzled by the above comment as to why a pita.

coastn -- I'm sorry. I had Hywy 550 in mind. I have been on 9 & 17 but so long ago that I do not remember them.

No problem. Totally agree with you regarding 550.

So just I understand the conversation, 9 & 17 ok, 550 not ok, right?

Also, my family is having a possible change of heart from River Run to Tiger Run. Sounds like that might make the trip a bit less stressful. I heard Winter Park can be challenging up to Granby and best to go around. Tiger Run puts us just south of Breckenridge.

You are correct. 550 is definitely not ok. Tiger Run is very nice. Sunday I'm towing from Breck to Fairplay on 9, turning right on 285 to Poncha Springs, turning right on 50 to Montrose. Done this several times.

It's actually a nice route - a bit slow. Vail pass is a cinch. The gun barrel (17) is a good section of road. However when you get to 70 you could turn right and go to the junction of 40 and then head north (exit 232 near Empire) This way does have more traffic and is not as pretty.

Thanks everyone for the input. this is exactly the info I was hoping to receive to make some preliminary decisions on routes to book activities and stays along the way. Still not firm on whether to stay at River Run vs Tiger Run. Will mostly likely have family staying either in cabins onsite or nearby. have some time to decide.
