Info on CA state route 78

Requesting info from anyone who has traveled on California state Hwy 78 traveling west from Salton Sea area (CA state Hwy 86). We will be going to Ramona, CA. F350 Ford PU pulling 36' Fifth Wheel.

Not sure I'd tow an RV up the Banner Grade in to Julian. Lots of tight twists and turns.

Have camped many times in Borrego Springs and day-tripped to Julian on S3 connecting to 78. I remember there is a sign on 78 with a length restriction beyond that point. Can't remember specifically but convinced me not to haul my 36' Reflection up there. Do remember lots of tight turns as mentioned above.

Thanks coastin. On the map it looks like a long detour to go down from where we are (Niland, CA) to I 8 and up around to Poway and then on to Ramona where we plan to camp. Was hoping 78 would be doable as it is the most direct route from where we are. I appreciate the advice/firsthand info.

I have taken that road in my 35ft motor home years past and that was a bit challenging. I did see semi’s on that road. I wouldn’t do it with a big trailer or 5ver.

We live in Ramona, we take our trailer both east and west on 78 regularly. Both directions have twists and turns but nothing that can't be navigated with a little care. Now if its snowing you may not want to come up from the desert at that time, the pass is about 4,000 feet and snow can accumulate.

    Good luck,

    Bob

30 ft kingpin to axle is the restriction i believe. For our little trailer its not too bad

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't get any better than local knowledge, appreciate it. We have come up to your area from the West (Escondido) several times but never from the East.
