Portable satellite antenna
I know this is an old subject hashed over many times, and probably also by myself, but, is the Dish tailgater a good portable antenna for the camper or is there another that is either better or as good?
Thanks

Ray...I have one of the old funny shaped cube type Dish tailgaters and it is not something that I would buy again. The antenna dishes are so small that they get weak signals and that means losing signal strength in bad weather and being restricted to short cable runs of no more than 50 feet.
Others will chime in, but there are way better options. Frankly, we just stream tv and overair tv now. I only break out the cube if we have no other options.

I've got the Tailgater. It is easy to set up but you cannot record anything but what you are watching.

I have a Winegard X2 Dish satellite. Had for 7-8 years. Still working good. It is bigger than most so take that into consideration as to where you'll store it while traveling.
I would also suggest getting a Dish app for your phone. I have Dish Pointer Pro and it's been great. It helps you to find the sats before placing the dish on the ground. If you camp anywhere where there's trees then a sat finder is a necessary tool.

We use a Dish Tailgater as well. It's also helpful to have a good dish finder app when setting these mobile dishes up. We use Satelite Finder Pro. Its free, works great and really helps with finding the best location on a campsite to place your mobile dish.
Update: Another good tool to have when setting up any dish is a satelite compass inclinomter like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CUXIZZC...che-3786-im-20
Very useful tool when trying to avoid trees, buildings, RVs, or other line of site obstacles when placing your sat dish and pointing at the birds you subscribe too. Used this and a strength sniffer for many years setting up new dishes. Takes alot of the guess work out.Last edited by trailrydr; 03-21-2022 at 03:29 PM. Reason: Satelite compass inclinometer.

X2 on the Pathway X2. It has the largest reflector of any of the portable antennas for Dish Network and, therefore, has the highest signal strength. We are very happy with ours. Keep in mind that the internal coax on the RV is often sub-par and you always need to use quad-shield coax with the antenna.

We recently purchased a Tailgater and it works well but is quirky at times. I placed it on the roof while we’re here in AZ for the winter. Originally had it near the bedroom and it will constantly look and fine tune to the satellites making noise. Moved it further away and it’s better now. Many people in the park are using a Tailgater and have them set on the ground and on the tripod you can purchase. I bought it in a bundle from Dish and included cables and a Wally for $309 on sale. Adding service was easy as I added to an existing Dish account and it was $5/mos. I bought the Wally without DVR option but a harddrive can be purchased afterwards from approx $100 to record shows.
Good luck.
