To be fair, exchanges are a good place to off load tanks past the ten year mark. Worth the 5LBS to get a newer one.

The other thing they tell you is that the shortage is due to safety, I call BS on both excuses !!!!
Here is what FL law states about Propane Tank Exchange:

    FL regulations:

The net quantity of contents in terms of weight, measure or count must be on the container(s). If your company markets cylinders offered for exchange as containing 20 lbs. of gas and the cylinder contains 19.5 lbs., you are in violation of this law. The maximum allowable variance may not be lower than the amount advertised; however, it may be over the amount advertised. Because of the safety hazards associated with the overfilling of LP gas containers, many companies address this issue by advertising 19 pounds of gas rather than 20 lbs.

True, as long as the Exchange company does not use a propitiatory Valve design that can't be filled by a normal Propane fill station. I have heard Blue Rhino is starting to use their own/non-standard valve.

Many of us have 30 lb tanks which usually can't be exchanged.

A 20lb tank is designed to hold 20 lbs of Propane.

Any expansion requirement is calculated in the design of the tank.

You are simply getting 20% less Propane for the price when you choose to exchange your tanks.

    This is correct.

Blue Rhino had a blog post on their website about how they were going to reduce fill as customers didn't want to see a price increase. This was probably 10 years ago when I was living in Denver.

Costco also sells by volume, and their prices are very competitive, as is their gas.

Us either. Everyone has that tank scale at the pump, but no one uses it, at least not for RV tanks. A 30# tank is 7 gallons.

Tractor Supply in Lake City, Northern Florida, is just a tad over $2 per gallon. We have filled a tank 4 times since 12/15/20.

I feel sorry for our neighbors here at the park. They have a smaller motor home, but the tanks are permanently mounted. They had to drive it to the filling station for propane. Here at the park it costs $20+ to fill up. We go to Tractor Supply. On the way back is 80 cent ice cream cones at Burger King...

Reading the U-haul explanation about the difference between Exchange Tanks and a re-filled Tank, it is almost like I wrote the words. Oh, wait, I did write the words...
