Well, we're definitely the former and not the latter.

Oh, and we're planning on being there on Wednesday.

It's nice and quiet up there. The only guests are coyotes and the odd bearded stranger in a Subaru.

It's a chilly day here in Buckeye, so I've been hanging out by the fireplace putting together registration packets for the Quartzsite Rally. BTW today is the LAST day to get a ticket - we do have a handful of empty slots. The rally is ON even if the BLM is not working. Our camping area is open. However, the resources at the BLM LTVAs may be closed causing private resources to be heavily used. If you're coming for 3, 4 or 5 days then you should plan to carry in your water and supplies and carry out your trash. If you're planning an extended stay after the rally, you should be watching the message boards for the status of the LTVAs.

    4th Annual Quartzsite Rally Jan 11 - 13, 2019

I’d like to point out a safety issue for members attending the rally, especially pet owners.

This may be common knowledge for some but I feel it should be addressed since there might be members who are new to camping in this type of environment.

While boondocking near Quartzite we have noticed quite a few coyotes, usually in packs of 4 to 6. I’ve seen them in the morning, in the middle of the day and late at night. They blend in so well with the environment that I have walked right up on them without realizing it, when I was hiking, so I’m sure if they were stalking prey they would be near invisible as well.

The locals say they won’t generally attack people but that doesn’t mean a pack of them won’t scare the crap out of you in that scenario. I was definitely glad I was carrying that day and would suggest the same if y’all decide to venture out. There are hundreds of miles of trails in the area to explore.

If you have a pet, I would strongly suggest not letting them off the leash and for the love of Larry please don’t be the a hole that ties your pet up outside and leaves them unattended.

Good point Ed. And just because you're walking them on a leash, they are not 100% safe. In our Tucson neighborhood, we've actually had coyotes sneak up behind people walking their dog on a leash and try to grab a small dog away from the owner. Just be aware of your surroundings while walking your dogs.

City coyotes are a bit more bold with people than the rural ones you're likely to run into in Quartzsite. They are generally fairly timid but it pays to remember they are opportunistic predators. Usually a shout is all it takes to scatter them but it is Arizona and you can carry a device that uses high speed projectiles to dissuade close encounters of the aggressive kind. Carrying a flashlight at night is pretty much mandatory for safety in the desert.

If you really want to creep yourself out, go outside on a warm night with a black light and do some looking around. It's amazing what we live with here and don't normally see.

Black lights should only be used with felt-lined Led Zeppelin posters!
