@Riverbug; I just checked my phone app "Torque Pro" and don't see any option to view amps. I am intrigued by what we are learning here. My truck has "Dual Extra Heavy Duty Alternator" on the window sticker. I will research the Renogy device; I recall there was a Youtube on this recently.
@MoonShadow_1911, any thoughts on which alternator to tap into ? Are the alternators in parallel ? are both outputting all the time ?

I would tap off the secondary battery, using the ring terminals.

Thanks. I'm a Ford guy too (F350), so not sure about GM either. I'm not aware there was a heavier duty option when I ordered, but there may have been. I think the 240 amp was the standard option for the 350. I'll have to check on that.

Ah! I think my 2019 F350 has dual 320 amp alternators. I need to check that now.

Thanks all for the responses. I think I have the answer to my specific question after posting it on the Ford forum (paraphrasing here)...hook up the tow vehicle umbilical, start the vehicle, turn on all the accessories that I can, and use a clamp meter to get the amperage reading to compare with the rated amperage of the alternator. That does seem to be the best solution at this point.

I just installed the Renogy 40amp version in my F350 7.3 gas truck. It has the 240 alternator. I follow a few guys on YouTube and one of them installed the same DC charger on his Ram 3500 with a 220 alternator. No problems for him in 2 years...

Plus my truck came with a 400w inverter with AC plugs built in. That means the system is designed for at least 28amps at 14.4 volts. So stretching that to 40 amps should not over stress the 240 alternator in my opinion. Just don't use the inverter and the DC charger at the same time.

My 2019 Lariat SuperDuty invoice says it has the "dual extra heavy duty alternators" at no additional charge/standard. Order form stated 200 A option (larger than stock but standard on diesel). Mine has snowplow prep package so wording could be a little different...

    https://media.ford.com/content/dam/f...Super-Duty.pdf
    this shows
--220A standard on Lariat (does not mention dual)
--Also shows 322A and 377A (both dual combined) Optional on 6.7 liter.

I have the dual so I am confused by all the wording. My updated guess is that I have the 322 or 377A dual combined alternators.

    Good to know, thanks much.

FYI. A few monthes back I installed a Renogy 40 amp DC to DC charger in my 5th wheel and connected the trigger wire to the running lights. I wanted this charger so we could run the fridge on 120 volts using the 3000 watt Go power inverter charger while driving. The fridge draws 44 amps from the batteries so the solar wasn't enough unless it was a cloudless day around June. I used 4 AWG welding cable and connected it to the positive on one of the trucks batteries through a 60 amp inline circuit breaker close to the battery and put an Andeson type connector near the 7 pin receptacle. The DC to DC charger manages the amps very well and the highest amp draw I've seen is 39.7 amps. That was when the batteries were low and after a few minutes the amperage started dropping down so the Renogy unit doesn't draw a constant 40 amps, its variable as needed. I used a clamp on amp meter during testing. Sorry, I don't know how many amps my trucks alternator can provide but I suspect its around 200. Good luck!
