I-95 Alternative Between Savannah and Columbia

Does anyone have a suggestion for avoiding I-95 between Savannah and Columbia SC? That section of I-95 is so bad it is very hard on my rig. Has anyone used US 321 as an alternative?

    Thanks for the help.

    Personally, I would take US-321.

We just took 321 last week. It was AWFUL! Slow, speed traps, bad roads (as bad as I-95 is SC). And if you get behind a local going slow there are few alternatives to pass on that 2 lane road.

We won't use it again. Oh - luckily we weren't towing; we just had the truck.

I've had much better luck on the US highways in GA, SC, NC, VA, etc. I-95, on the other hand... we thought it was bad when it took us eight and half hours on I-95 to get from Aberdeen, MD, to Richmond, VA. We said, "that can't happen again!" On the way back, it took us 12!!! I-95 is cursed.

I commiserate with you on the condition of Rt95 through SC. It is a disgrace especially considering all the federal funds the state receives for highway improvement and maintenance. One time I came down from Augusta to Brunswick via RT25. It wasn't quick by any means but I did keep moving. I also got the "Statesboro Blues". In Augusta you could take Rt520 to Columbia. Or do what I choose to do...... Get through as quickly as possible or stay the heck out of South Carolina.

A number of people have recommended US301 from Orangeburg, SC to just above Jacksonville. It is a 4 lane road from what I hear. When I mapped that route it added about an hour to the trip.

I don't see the reason to stay off RT95 through Georgia. It's a nice highway with three to four lanes for the distance and it moves nicely. The change entering SC northbound is abrupt!

Totally agree with Wicked ace. GA I-95 is great. Just offering up alternatives. Which, for me is just bearing it out on I-95 in the future.
