02/2022 REFRIGERATOR RECALL - post all comment here = don't start a new thread.

Contact GD and see if they'll authorize you to go to ANY dealer or use a mobile tech (you'd have to pay the travel cost for that, though).

Grand design told me that I can go to any dealer, or call a mobile tech, but as you state I would be on the hook for their travel cost. I am not willing to pay anything for them to look at my trailer and pass it. That includes me driving to the closest dealer (one hour away). I called our dealer and when we go that direction in September, I will set up an appointment for the trip home. We will drive more or less past them going home anyway.

Do you know of any work around so I don't have to take the time and expense of taking it in?

Just had a discussion with my GD dealer this morning. He said I would need to first bring it in for an "inspection" and then IF work was required, that's when they would order the wiring repair kit from GD. That's why it would take at least two weeks. I'm not sure why GD doesn't just send all their dealers a dozen or so kits to have on-hand.

Maybe (????) if you did the work yourself and it's done properly, all you would need to do is take it to a dealer for inspection and be done.

Great Post, I found the same exact thing on my 2019 303RLS with the same Dometic frig. I have an appointment at our dealer, which is 50 miles away, but they say they need it for at least 2 weeks. I was able to pull the frig and do the repair in under an hour. I know my repair is going to be far superior than the dealers and question whether or not I even need to take it in, but it sounds like if you don't take it to a dealer you can't get the recall removed. Do you know of any work around so I don't have to take the time and expense of taking it in?

Ditto. I know my repair is also far better than the dealers. I still don't understand why I received the recall letter as our installation, like yours, had no wiring on the burner side of the fridge.
First thing I'm going to do is call GD and see if they will clear the recall based on pictures. I am not a certified technician and if GD won't clear it, I'll set up an appointment at the dealer for the inspection. The dealer I would have to take it to is terrible, but I will suck it up and do what I have to do. Hopefully, they'll do their inspection, see its properly repaired, and clear the recall.
There is a liability issue in ignoring the recall IMO, so I'm going to follow whatever protocol is necessary to get it cleared.

GD will authorize any dealer to do it, just maybe you have. One close bye you could use

I can assure you they will not clear it by pictures from you. I have sent them two set of pictures. The first set shows that there is not an issue to begin with. No Good... Sent the ma second set showing how I had secured the wire (which was not an issue to begin with). Still no go. I do not have any wire going across the wall, nor anywhere else, that could cause an issue. Still no go. If you do get it passed, please let us know.

Rob,
Having trouble adding in my photo and when I do it’s on the wrong axis, how do you rotate it, and had do you get added in to my profile when responding to questions

The issue with rotated pictures happens (usually with those pictures taken on a phone). Easy fix - open the photo and do a minor edit (I usually remove a row of pixels), then save it in the proper orientation. It should then post correctly.

When you get your rig worked on please report back on how it works out. I ran a snake inspection camera up in my fridge compartment and did not see loose wires but the staples GD used to attach the wires to the luan were backing out and one had one prong in the wood and the other bent over. This follows the principle that if the customer can’t see it then, no problem.

What he did was leave the staples in, then screwed cable ties to the outside wall a couple inches from each staple. fridgerepair.jpg Took it in Wednesday, picked it up Thursday...it pays sometimes to live in a small town:)

Cannot tell from the pics. GD states thay if a screw goes into only luan, then a moly must be used.

Upon inspection my wire is not 12-2!!! They used 14-2 instead. I looked and my vin is not included in the list even though I was manufactured during that time. What a joke this is. I wound up finding that my circuit does not conform to electrical code. So now what???? I’m not taking it to the dealer so that they car make it worse. No way that they are running a 12-2 to replace it. They will come up with some nonsense excuse. This is unacceptable in every way. I am really dissatisfied with this type of nonsense. Violating electrical code seems to be the norm I guess.

? Is 14-2 a violation of code? The only thing in your trailer running on a 20A circuit should be your air conditioner(s) Everything else should be 15A. 14-2 should be acceptable on any 15A circuit. Your AC'S do need to be on 12-2. Most household wiring for new homes is 14-2 now days, unless a particular circuit NEEDS a 20A line, then 12-2. Check your circuit panel to see if the fridge or microwave is 15A or 20A.

Full disclosure I’m an electrician. It was on a 20amp breaker and it was 14-2 so that is a violation of code. Also household construction uses 14-2 for lighting and that’s it. Every outlet is 12 gauge these days. The fridge manual says up to 17 feet can be 14 gauge. I tested it and it draws 300-350 watts. I swapped the breaker with a 15 amp. Now that I think of it I wonder if the ac is on a 15 and the fridge was on the 20. Maybe they swapped the breakers.

I'm not an electrician. Anything I know is from working knowledge with others. Running 14-2 0n a 20A breaker is a no no, so that would absolutely be in violation. I have done wiring in 3 houses, my own, and both of my sons. I/we only ever use 12-2. It's just my preference. I don't have to worry about what load I'm putting on a circuit, within reason. I do know that the wiring in my fridge area is 12-2, both the fridge and the microwave. I wonder why they would put 14-2 in when everything is called out as 12-2 in the recall?

My dealer said that they have to pull the fridge out to inspect the wires. That said, after we had the recall done (and the 110V wire WAS fried) the fridge didn’t work right. Stuff in the freezer wasn’t really cold. After 6 days of LP/AC use, it stopped working altogether. After explaining to GD they said right away that it definitely was a reinstall mistake. The baffles/insulation got pushed away, so it was a ventilation problem. So the battle now is between GD and the dealer that did the recall.
Grrrrrrrr.
