brakes.jpgbrakes2.jpg2017 300GK. Had to replace all 4 brakes with less than 1k miles on them. Drums and shoes were totally cooked. (I am NOT hard on the brakes so please don't go there ;) ). I am just curious if anyone else has had early failure. I suspect the delivery driver burned them up and the dealer didn't catch.... I did note they were not working at delivery but I (wrongly) suspected problem was with the truck.... Took back to dealer (they had it for 3 weeks). I suspect they didn't really investigate properly (can't prove) and just ended up adjusting the brakes. The adjustment worked for a couple hundred miles. I started hearing a metal to metal rub when applying brakes... Hmmm.. Also noted a cold drum post stopping...
Anyway, I replaced all brakes (including backing plates) and drums on my dime with a little extended warranty help as GD warranty had expired and my dealer is 300+ miles away...
Be sure to check your brakes at delivery!!! My lesson learned the hard way. My bad.

Chuck, that's not good at all. By any chance did you check to make sure there is zero volts at the magnets when the truck is hooked up and the brakes are not being applied? If there is a wiring problem with the truck or trailer, it could be applying braking voltage when you don't want it too. And the brakes would get worn out very quickly.

A 5er near us at the last Elkhart Rally arrived with brakes that looked like that. Root cause turned out to be a faulty break-away switch. Wiggling the pull pin would engage the brakes. Owner said he never felt anything while towing with his big diesel.

Yeah, checked all voltages when I noticed the condition of the drums.... Also checked the connector at the truck... All normal.. Thank s for input!

When I picked up my 310GK from the dealer last June, my first comment was the brakes aren't working. I had my gain set to 10 and I couldn't feel much in the way of braking. Even when I applied the brakes manually, not much. I told the service manager and she told me "give the brakes some time, they need to break in". I have been a mechanic for close to 40 years, and have driven travel trailers and fifth wheels for 40 years. Shortly after getting my new 5er home, I saw posts on the forums that cautioned about grease on brakes and some people that were being paid to have their brakes inspected. I contacted Lippert and got authorization to inspect my brakes. I found grease on two of the brake linings. I replaced all of them and the braking still isn't what I would call good. Thankfully my truck has great brakes. I am seriously considering installing disc brakes.

Had the same type of problem on my 2018 310, on the driver side only. The dealer replaced the brake assembly on that side with after market parts which seem to be working ok. Appears the self adjusters on that side were faulty. I check the temp when I stop for fuel ect. and that side is running about 30 degrees hotter than the other side at about 135 degrees.
