We are a family of 3, Mom, Dad and 4yr boy. The boy loves his "room" in the camper, but continues to bump his head when waking up in the middle of the night. When we winterized the camper this fall we removed the mattresses to store in our house. I noticed the upper bunk is held in place on the supporting rail by just a few screws. It appears to be two sections.

My question is has anyone removed the upper bunk, and if so does it have any negative affects on the kitchen wall? IE does that bunk add stability to that kitchen wall? My quess is it doesn't as there is a pocket door that takes up 1/2 of the wall surface.

Also if you have removed your upper bunk details on how much of a pia it was or wasn't.

Thanks

I can tell you I tried to remove mine and it did not go well. We came to the conclusion that they installed the cabinets in the bunkhouse after the bunk bed. Its been a while now, but as I recall we were going to have to cut it out of there. It looked like just a few screws at first, but as we removed them and the trim board below the bunk it was going to quickly become much more involved.

Let me know if you have any success, I would like to remove ours too.

we removed ours - slight PIA, but we muscled through. The top frame is metal and we cut most of it with a skill saw and metal cutting blade. Had to be careful of all the metal shards flying around. when the saw couldn't get us any closer, we simply went to old school and used a hack saw blade and my husband had a handle that would hold it to get right up to the wall without ruining it.

we are so glad we did it!! just muscle through. now the bottom bunk has a double layer mattress on it. the room gets cooler when a/c is on, there is more light, ventilation. now when our granddaughter and her daddy come with us - he sleeps on the dinette and groans! Granddaughter gets the bedroom!

some small issues were against the kitchen wall - we had some repairs not because we ruined it but grand design hid some "issues" where the frame met the wall.

Thanks, Sounds like it going to be a bit more time that first anticipated, but we will move forward with the conversion

Hi there,
checking back with you to see if you muscled through with removal of top bunk. Been getting a couple of requests about removing it and so I looked back to your post. Just curious.

FYI, 6 mos later, we are THRILLED we muscled through! It has been awesome.

Reading posts like this make me wonder if GD could sell a LOT more of the "BH" configs if they'd leave that area empty, with dealer-installable options readily available (bunks, or second bed, or office furniture, or even dog kennels!). I've read post after post of individuals that want to use the space for something other than young children (apparently the intended usage).
