ABS on 2024 Imagine Worth It?

Hey all,

I'm in the process of deciding between a 2023 2670MK and a 2024 2670MK and the main difference is the fact that the 2024 comes with ABS brakes whereas the 2023 does not. They're otherwise practically identical and I can get the 2023 for roughly $2k less so I'm wondering if the ABS brakes are worth the additional investment.

Your thoughts/opinions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks

More to go wrong imo
We have come this far without them

JMO, but I agree...to a certain extent. Most large trailers simply don't have the brakes powerful enough to lock up the wheels, so it would appear that ABS would be superfluous. However, towing on snow could be a different story, but how many people tow their trailers in the snow? Smaller trailers that can lock up the wheels may benefit from ABS.

I agree with the others unless the ABS is also disk brakes, then that's a different story.

I think you can buy the module to make the brakes abs from Lippert for less than 2k. So that’s also a factor everything else equal.

Take a serious look at both trailers and which one you think is built better. If you see noticeable differences that’d be more worth 2k to me.

There are other differences also....

2" receiver hitch on the rear instead of bumper, LED strip lights on the ceiling instead of pucks, 12 volt charging station, tankless water heater, pass through floor is rubber and has LED strip lighting, couple other items and also trade in value will be more than the 2023 (unless you keep it over 10 years, then it really doesn't matter).

Super helpful feedback - Thank you!

Yeah, couldn't watch all the way through. It would appear this system works fantastically if you're driving on their test track. I generally don't do much traveling on their test track though. :) Most of my driving is not on ice and snow, where it would appear this system would do a great job. But considering I've never, ever locked up the brakes on my trailer, I'm not sure how much good that system will actually do in real life driving. And FWIW, I don't know anyone driving a 5th wheel, or large trailer that experiences wheel lock ups in heavy braking. So it looks like a system for a few very special instances. I don't know what the cost is, but considering it's from Lippert, I'm figuring it's very high priced. Thanks, but no thanks.

In another post it was mentioned that the hubs on ABS system did not allow for removal of outside bearing, and repair/replacement would involve replacing the hub. Any truth in this?

Only $2k less for the 2024? I would definitely get that, as someone else mentioned, you'll get that back if you sell it in the next 10 years. Also, many RV parks are limiting spots to rigs that are 10 or 15 years old, so that would give you another year of availability. As huntr70 said, you're getting more than just ABS for the price difference. As for the ABS, why not get it, It won't hurt and might help in an emergency. Most safety systems like ABS are only available on a few models, but within a short time become standard on all. In 10 years a trailer without ABS might seem antiquated and more difficult to sell.

"Also, many RV parks are limiting spots to rigs that are 10 or 15 years old, so that would give you another year of availability."

That may be a bit of an overstatement. I do find the some RV parks are limiting trailers based on age, but I don't know that I would go so far as to classify them as "many". We've come across very, very few in our travels. And, FWIW, those tend to be very upscale, read: expensive, RV parks.

I have no idea. I have to talk to our techs. We pull the drums for PA safety inspection.

In talking to our Techs, they are removable and replaceable bearings.

We bought a new 2023 Grand design reflection 370FLS, after only 5K miles the brakes on the driver side are metal on metal. Repair shop replaced all brake pads and the one hub that was damaged. 5 miles from the shop my TPMS is showing driver's side tire heating up to 90 while passenger side is 55. I believe the ABS is starting the process again, meaning new brake pads and possibly hubs every 5K mile at approx $2500 each time. Waiting to hear from tech why? I know you need to "break in the brakes" but why again only one side still heats up and not the other?
