Another Furrion Tankless E5 Error

A couple of weeks ago, we were boondocking overnight at a concert. No hookups. The morning we were leaving, the Furrion tankless water heater started throwing the dreaded E5 code.

I Googled the issue and found Riveyman’s solution here, and blew out the flex hose on the pressure switch. Also removed and reset all the connectors on the controller board. No joy.

Emailed Furrion/Lippert, sent them vin, photos, etc. and they sent me a new pressure switch. Installed it today, same issue.

This may be water flow related, with the sink faucet about a third open, heater works with no error. Turn up the water flow and the E5 code appears. Turning off the water will reset the heater.

I’ve sent another email to Furrion, but thought I would check in here in case anyone had another idea I could chase. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Bill

Received the new blower assembly today, and installed it yesterday. Appears that this was the issue, ran hot water at kitchen and bathroom for ten minutes, no error code.

Thanks to Lippert for working with me on this one.

We recently had our Furrion tankless water heater replaced under warranty due to a frozen motor. I suspect the same problem that allows water to enter the exhaust and block the pressure switch tube also allows it to continue down the flu and into the motor.

I asked my dealer if they had any ideas on how to prevent water from entering the exhaust. They said they knew of one customer who made a removable shield to go over the exhaust port. I've also run across a couple of internet postings where folks said adding a bubble style bug screen resolved the problem.

I use bug screens on the water heater and furnace.

I also cut a piece of Reflectix to insulate the water heater door and did not cut out for the intake or exhaust, so one solid piece. I’m using this as part of my winterizing, but may use it all year to keep water out of the unit while driving. If I turn off the power switch on the heater, I’ll have to open the door to turn it on and maybe remember to remove the Reflectix…

Some sort of magnetic shield (soup can?) over the exhaust port sounds like a great idea.

We had same issue repeated several times after heavy rains (especially with wind). Water came in through exhaust. We use the temporary shield over entire furnace if we know weather is coming in. If we don’t cover during storm, we get E5 error. Then we blow furnace out with leaf blower and it will work. Regardless of “fix”, this common issue should be a focus for GD/Lippert to resolve proactively for their customers. I’m not holding my breath!
