Awning coming off:Reflection 337 RLS

Just went on dyersonline.com they are a Rv online store. they have the 3/16 x 1" oscar rivits made by Dometic. Look just like the molly rivets. They mushroom out on the inside. item # 83801. 10 per bag. $7.98 plus shipping Dometic makes awnings and slide toppers.

Update: I had sent my dealer (greenway rv. Wisconsin rapids WI ). Receipts for rivets and the tool I had to purchase to install them a week ago to repair my awning. A check showed up today for the full amount. Way to go Greenway RV and Grand design. Good customer service.

We just picked up our 303 on Wednesday and took a couple of days to load and inspect it. A few minor fixes are needed, nothing serious so far, except for the awning. As others have mentioned on here, ours is separating at the leading edge, about 6 ins so far. Our dealer is about 125 miles away. I had mentioned the awning issue to the dealership, salesman, and a tech prior to leaving their lot. They all said they had not heard of any issues and even their warranty dept was unaware. I checked the unit prior to leaving and didn't notice the separation. We have notified the dealer and are now waiting for their response on when and how to have this fixed. I find it rather strange that with all the discussion about this, that the dealers (at least mine) have not been informed by GD to inspect these and fix it before delivery. Will post later with the resolution.

I don't own a Reflection, but if there were a problem on ANY GD product that was as wide spread and serious as this awning issue seems to be, I certainly think the company would distribute a bulletin to owners and dealers alike. GD, did anything like this happen?? It's the right thing to do.

Hi Andy & Julie (@thompsons 376rl),

Dealers have been contacted and are aware of the fix. What @Canyon Ridge mentioned in the post dated 07/19/14 @ 12:15 pm may be a communication issue within the dealership, which beyond our control.

Best regards,
~ Janice

Janice,

Thank you for the reply. I believe Grand Design is a great company and I am a loyal customer. Thanks for doing the right thing.

Janice, thank-you for following this. I just heard from my dealer this morning (July 21) and we have worked out arrangements to have our awning fixed locally. It won't be until next week as we are taking the unit out for a four day first run for us to get used to it and figure out where and how all the "stuff" works!
Thanks again, and it's great to see Grand Design standing behind their product.

Well !@*#!! Now mine just came loose. We were camped along the shore in Northern Maine and had no internet service, so I wasn't able to follow this thread. When I hooked up the truck, and did a walk around this morning, I saw that the rail had come loose for about 18 inches on both the front and rear. I called JD, and he told me how to fix it. I made it to Vermont this evening and tried unsuccessfuly to locate the rivets. I'll call JD tomorrow and have them shipped to a location I'll be at in a few days. In the mean time, I need to hit the road in the morning, and I don't want to worry about the awning coming all the way off.

I got onto the roof and came up with a temporary fix that appears to work really good until I can get the rivets. I ran the awning out about 12 inches to give some room to work. I removed the loose screws one at a time and tightly stuffed the screw holes with toothpicks! Then I ran the screws back in and applied a significant amount of torque. The screws tightened up nicely, and the rail pulled back tight to the coach. Then I had Ginnie run the awning back in until it just touched. This should hold us until I get to Ohio in a few days and can perform a permanent repair.

Next, I'm going to put my engineering experience to work and design a limiter switch circuit which should prevent this from ever happening again. If I'm successful, I'll be happy to share the design with all of you.

Other than the problems I had earlier with the refrigerator, and now the awning, the 337 has held up very well over the 5000 miles I've put on it so far.

TuscanJim, I see you were up in Maine and Just wondering where are you now in Vermont. Which way are you heading to after Vermont? I'm leaving Sunday for a camping trip. I have a 11ft. gorilla ladder, rivet gun and drill. I live in New Hampshire and just did mine every single screw with Oscar rivets. I drilled the holes just big enough for the rivets to fit in. I have 8 Oscar rivets left over. Oscar rivets mushroom out real nice inside the wall. They are different from a regular rivet.. I ordered mine thru dyersonline.com. It's a RV parts store. They are called: Dometic 3/16" x 1' awning Oscar rivets 10 pack bagged. $7.98 per bag. Item # 83801. Dometic makes awnings and slide toppers. Let me know if I can help you out and send the extra Oscar rivets to you overnite. Not sure how close you are from me in Vermont.

Dog Gone Mr. Lucky. I didn't see your post until tonight. We are now in Ohio. But JD sent the parts ahead to our next location, and I have a family member with all the tools we need to knock out this job. The temporary fix I did with the toothpicks has held up well, and the awning is holding tight. I really appreciate your willingness to help. THANK YOU!

Your welcome! Anytime your back and stuck in this area don't be afraid to ask me for help. Not a good feeling to be far from home and have your awning coming loose!

Can you use a standard Pop Rivet too with a a 3/16 head on it?

Thanks,
George

Found mine had pulled away over the entry door. Four of the attach screws on the door side end had stripped out and pulled free of the side wall. Leaving on a trip today so I inserted some plastic screw anchor material (cut the screw anchors in half to fill up part of the existing hole. Reattached with the original screws and resealed. I will do the rivet repair as soon as I possibly can.

Gerorge, when our awning pulled away our dealer tried over sized screws even after we told them about the rivets that GD said to use. Needless to say it pulled back away before we got home (15 miles).
Grand Design used the rivet suggested at last years rally and have not had any issues with the awning pulling away several thousand miles later.

Guess what I'm trying to say is use the rivets GD said to unless you want to have to fix it again. You'll be happier in the long run with less holes being put in the trailer

I've been following this thread and now have discovered that our awning is pulling loose above entry door.
All previously have been reflections in 300s models. Ours is a 29rs. Just purchased 05/01/15. Manufactured in March.
This has been a problem for more than a year, It really should have been resolved by now.
In spite of this the reflection was the best quality of the makes and models we looked at.

Thank you Janice,
I sent an e-mail to CS on Sun eve and received a package of rivets this afternoon (Tues) very quick response.
I can do the repair tomorrow.
We really like the trailer and found it far superior to the others we compared it to.

Hi Janice,
The awning track issue has reared its ugly head on my 303, just got home from FL, didn't use the awning down there but both ends are pulled loose now. I've been unable to find molly rivets, searched locally & the internet with no luck. I have a pop rivet tool and will do the repair myself if I can get the rivets. Is there a metal backing strip on the 303?

Chuck
