Bed lift struts

The struts for lifting the bed are very wimpy. The is difficult to lift and will not stay open on its own. Has anyone replaced (or supplemented) the stock struts with something a bit beefier? If so can you share what you used and how you mounted them?

Many folks swap into struts with higher load rating. They're readily available. I went a different route when I rebuilt our bed box and deck to handle a Purple 3 Hybrid and the ogre I am... Nikki being petite, I installed linear actuators. Push of a button and they would raise the lid and second push they would close it. Standard, off-the-shelf actuators that are 12VDC. I've since done away with that as Nikki wasn't a fan of trunk-like storage and rebuilt the base with two big drawers.

Wow, that sounds powerful. I did t expect that strong. Ever have any trouble with the bed lifting on its own while being towed?

No---it works perfect now. I tried the 120s and they were not enough. Now you can raise it with two fingers and it will stay elevated till you push it down.

I've replaced struts for others (who put in heavier mattresses or those bendable bed frames and associated mattresses).

Struts are easy to find on the internet or your local auto parts store. I like the internet better (they don't have people with less experience than me trying to help me when I am in their store).

You just need the length and select the ft/lbs you want. And they usually just snap off a ball joint and the new ones snap back on.

We upgraded our mattress to a queen mattress that came from our guest bedroom from our old house, it was only 2 years old and in good shape. One of the few things we kept when we sold everything to go full-time. I did replace the struts because the original struts would not hold up the new mattress and it kept falling on our heads and we were using a broom stock. But the new struts ended up being too strong for the original cheap wire hinges that GD installed and literally pulled the hinges apart. So I had to remove the mattress from the bedroom (not fun but needed flipping anyway), take it all apart and installed some heavy duty commercial door hinges my son had in a drawer in his garage. It will now outlast me!

Bought on Amazon. Had to have heavier ones for the new hybrid mattress. These stay up with no issues. Perfect replacement.

I replaced my 80's with 150's as I have a sleep number bed with twin chambers. The 150's work awesome and hold everything up as needed.

Struts

Here are the ones tgat replaced the stock struts. If you haven’t replaced your stock mattress with a real one yet, you'll need heavier struts when you do.

Thanks guys! I just replaced ours with 120 lb lift from Amazon and they worked perfectly! Easy upgrade using existing mounting hardware.
I hope all is well in Searcy, my hometown. Go Lions!

Save some money. The struts can be repositioned for more lift. No need to buy anything.

Already completed, and pleased with the results. 5 minute project to snap original struts off and new ones on. No repositioning of mounting required.
I am glad you are happy.

I just wanted to point out for those that are reading this, that there is another solution that is free, and effective.
