Besides a handgun, what form of RV protection do you have ready if needed?

What are your thoughts on a non-lethal hand gun option I see being offered now. For example the Byrna-SD CO2 powered - Pepper impregnated rounds. The video demo's on YouTube look like it might be a viable option for a non-lethal approach.

I briefly watched part of that video a few weeks back. I really don't have an opinion about it other than if someone thinks that it might fit their needs, it's certainly better than nothing. Having said that, I think all of us here can agree that carrying/owning a weapon of any kind is a personal choice, although sometimes there is conflict between couples as to what they want/need/feel comfortable with having or using, if needed. In those instances, it can sometimes be very difficult to come to agreement by both parties involved, and there can simply be a plethora of reasons.

The bottom line that really is the topic of this thread/discussion is personal safety and what it takes for someone to feel like they have done what they can and feel comfortable with that decision, in order to achieve that goal. I'm perfectly OK with what I choose to do to try and help secure our personal safety and I hope and pray that I NEVER have to be in a position to engage, as I'm sure that almost every single one of us do.

I am not a personal safety expert but i lived in New Jersey so there's that. We keep a couple cans of bear spray around. Wifey says she wants a gun around but then that would just give someone something to take from her. Bear spray will solve most problems and if you've seen it deployed it can be startling. if you can find some with fluorescent or neon dye all the better. Combine with an airhorn and you will buy yourself enough time and distance to bug out if needed. Keep a phone charged but tool number 1 is your brain, err on the side of caution, trust your instincts, eyes open and aware of how you would get out of dodge if you needed. Don't compromise safety to save a few bucks. Probably safe to say there's some safety in numbers (other tidy dry campers in the wally world lot, for example). Let them steal your stuff if they must, gun should be very last, life-threatened resort. All that said, carrying say a .38 DA revolver (1 hand operation) loaded with a couple rounds of bird shot before you get to the heavy stuff should provide nonlethal encouragement to evil doers to look elsewhere. and the birdshot won't penetrate a hundred yards across the campground and hurt someone.

Would never use bird shot for self defense unless it was a snake. If i have to discharge my weapon it is to stop the threat and will keep shooting until the threat is stopped. If you were to just wound a attacker he is still a threat. If you have to use a firearm to defend yourself it is going to be at very close range 3-6 feet away and at that range a feel i can put all shot on target with out worrying about hitting innocent people. If you shoot someone at a longer distance it is going to be much harder to prove it was self defense.

I carry most places & have a CCW from two states. In states where I can't carry I have bear spray in the trailer & a fungo bat next to the door. I hope to never use lethal force. It would change everybody's life in seconds. You will go to jail even if justified (at least for a while). You will be sued by somebody, lawyer fees, lost time in court for criminal or liability case, not to think of the emotional stress it will bring with shooting at a person.
Train, train, train-as mentioned. As someone has said "don't shoot at anything you are not willing to destroy"

Locally a few years back a guy chased down a couple of kids stealing lawn ornament off his property. Shooting from his car, he killed one of the kids...he's now doing 25 to life. Shooting to protect property is not a justifiable shoot.

Alright, I'm stepping off my soapbox.

Well, I think that we've probably covered about everything that the thread was originally started for, plus some other things that probably did vary off topic a bit.....BUT........I'd like to say thank you to all that commented and most importantly did NOT let this turn into a Political or Religious thread. Probably most of us have feeling about how this subject ties into BOTH of those areas, but we did NOT go there.....thank you all and with that, I'm going to close the thread.
