I am going to Baton Rouge for one month to see family and then am heading to Ocean Lakes at Myrtle Beach. GPS says to take Route 20 East through the city of Atlanta. Does anybody know any good campgrounds about half way through the route. To far to go in one day. Also how is Route 20 going through Atlanta probably not any worse than the Capital Beltway in Virginia where I live. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

You should be arriving into Atlanta on I85 so go east on I285 to loop around Atlanta on the East side. I would not go all the way to I20 in the middle of town.
If you go that route then Auburn would be about half way and there are several highly rated campgrounds in the area.

We accidentally went right through town from Stone Mountain (east of Atlanta) headed west. It was a very off traffic time and luckily all went well. We would not take that chance on purpose.

I agree about the closer route from D.C.--I-95 to I-85 (in NC), through Charlotte, Spartanburg, Greenville (SC) and into NE Atlanta.

You could see if Lake Lanier Islands campgrounds are still up and running for the season. Or, you could Stone Mountain Park has fabulous campgrounds open year round on Hwy 78, 6 miles East of I-285.

The trick about traveling through Atlanta is listening to AM-750's traffic reports and avoiding rush hour.

Cheha State Park in AL is nice. I believe it was 18 miles South of I20, so not convenient for just an overniter, but if staying for couple nights or so it is a beautiful area. I think it was an hour to hour and a half from Atlanta.
