I have a 2020 Durango RT, Hemi with no factory installed Tow Package. I would like to safely tow, a Grand Design 22 RBE, that has UVW (DRY) weight of 5125 and a tongue weight of 497. My Durango door sticker states GVWR of 7100 lbs and max combined weight of occupants and cargo of 1200 lbs. In the Durango, between two passengers and cargo, I calculated 500 lbs. With travel trailer dry weight of 5125, then adding water, propane, all our gear figure about 1000-1500 lbs meaning, total gross weight of the trailer would be 6125 to 6500 total lbs. Owners manual states it can tow 7400 lbs, and I am having the receiver hitch and brake controller installed.
Would that tow okay behind my Durango RT, and can I stretch it to a total of 6500 lbs with the 500 lbs inside the Durango? Thank you, for your experience and help, I appreciate it.

You'll be over payload on the RT.
500 lbs for dry tongue weight. Add 40 for propane, 90 for batteries, 100 for WDH another 150 for stuff in the 22RBE under the bed and in the front storage compartment.

Thats 880 lbs.
880 + your 500 = 1380. Brochure weights are always lower than real world weights. A dealer should be able to give you more accurate TW from the weight sticker on the TT.

No question you will be over the gvwr of your vehicle

There is more to a tow package than a receiver hitch and brake controller. Have them install a transmission cooler also.

As a point of reference our 22MLE comes in a bit under 6K lbs loaded with empty tanks. The tongue weight according to my WDH scale is 760 lbs. Add in another 108 lbs for the WDH hitch and bars and we are at 870 lbs leaving 330 lbs for passengers and cargo. As others others have said I think you are going to be over the 1200 lb payload of your truck.

As an aside the scaled shipping weight was approximately 200 lbs more than the published dry weight. I don't recall the actual dry tongue weight, I want to say a bit over 600 lbs, but it too was higher than the published number.
