Carrying a portable generator

Obviously getting off track but why not use cruise when towing
I do
I love having the cruise control to give me a break during light traffic conditions, anything can fail but the adaptive cruise control systems are much better than back in the early days, you still need to be present and not distracted while driving.

Other than height of generator being 2" taller than tonneau cover, the OP hasn't shared its capacity / wattage. Perhaps its high capacity with considerable weight. Personally, I own a "Champion" 2500 about size of small suitcase and weighs only 39lbs! It'll provide lighting-TV-small portable heater.

When we need to carry a portable generator, I would like to have a way to carry it without putting it in the back of our truck.
We have a 2025 315RLTS travel trailer.
Any suggestions?
I have a Stromberg Carlson trailer tray that mounts on the trailer frame available from Amazon or camping world

Two things (all IMO of course)... First, one should never use cruise control when towing a trailer - so placing a genie in the front receiver for camping wouldnt be a problem (for those who dont "cruise") while towing. Second, cameras arent the only thing used for front proximity alerts. But either way, they probably can be turned off (as in my '23 F250's case). Now, if one wants to view the front of their TV while driving - would suppose the windshield would work better.

The one we have mounts under the bumper and when not used, doesnt effect the OEM electronic nanies at all. However, do agree if using it to say... place a bike rack w/bikes or genie tray w/genie etc.. when not towing may cause some issues with the nanies. Not towing makes the rear OEM receiver available for just such occassions. Again... just my $.02.

Sorry, but I didn’t understand most of what you said in this. Why not use cruise? What does this have to do with electronics nanies? How do you mount a generator UNDER the bumper?

The best I can tell what he is talking about is using a front mounted hitch...which mounts under the front bumper. If you put a rack in that hitch then it and/or the stuff in it can block your front sensors which can impede your adaptive cruise control. Whether you are comfortable with this or not is a matter of personal preference. That said, there are some people who think that using cruise control at all while pulling a trailer is unsafe.

You probably already have the generator, but I went with dual 2500W generators and a parallel kit. That way the wife can get minimal power in a pinch and I don't have to deal with lifting an 80 pound gennie back and forth.

Putting a generator on the tongue of your trailer is going to add to your (already high) tongue weight. I have a Champion dual fuel 2000 watt that I only run off propane. I adapted it to run off the camper's propane quick connect and have three 12 foot hoses so I can run the generator on the tailgate of my truck after sliding it 18 inches. It's a small unit, but can run my AC with a SoftStart. I suggest one or two small generators (with electric start) that will fit under your cover.

The 315RLTS can be a bit of a tongue heavy beast, especially if you are full timers and have a washer & dryer. If you search the 315 facebook page, there are several discussions on how heavy some of the year models are. It may be worth looking into that to be sure you are up for a tongue rack. The basement is large for a trailer, but I’d hate to give any of that space up personally. We keep a generator in the truck for this reason.

They make a rack that attaches above propane bottles. Put it there when traveling with your rig.

IF you own a NEWER TV (tow vehicle), there are proximity sensors built into the bumper, cameras built into the grill, and SAS (which is the electronic steering angle sensor) all of which can be possibily disrupted when placing/removing added weight or blocking with a aftermarket FRONT MOUNTED HITCH under the bumber and placing heavy and/or large items on a removeable hitch tray. Some of those can be turned off, others may only show up in the stored vehicle data. On mine, had to get an alignment done just for adding the front hitch mount because of the added weight.

As for cruise control, I never use it when pulling cause I know that crap happens with both traffic, my vehicles, and my towables. And automation is limited to what it was coded for - I used to be one of them "coder" guys, and worked for organizations that "marketed" those bells and whistles (always in the fine print...).

They got much deeper pockets, lawyers, and deniability than most all general public consumers. By all means, try avoiding the lawsuit when someone or something goes wrong and you claim the safety features failed (automation, brakes, sensors, hitch, pinbox, etc). Oh, one other thing, hope you didnt modify you TV any that could "possibly" be at fault......

Happy Trails!
