A comment at Escapade made me start to think. The presenter suggested that a Garmin InReach or similar device is good to have as there is little cell phone service along the AlCan Highway. True?

I am a ham, as is our son, so we could set up a schedule, but that would only be once a day, which isn't all that great in case of an emergency. Also, I have to set up the antenna and radio every time I use it.

I will have a 2 meter radio and a CB radio mounted in the truck.

We carry a Garmin In-Reach device when we take our long summer trips.

It is as much a safety device as it is a tracker. There is a yearly fee plus a monthly fee when you want (month-to-month plan). The monthly fee depends on how you want to use it (timing of tracks; amount of messages; etc.).

We do not use it to communicate on any regular basis; I don't think it would be practical for that. It tracks us and we can share our tracks with others privately via a Gamin website that requires a password to access (sent by us to those who want to see where we are).

If we need assistance, or come across anyone needing assistance and are out of cell coverage (often when hiking or driving in remote areas), we can press the SOS button and send texts as well.

Here is an example of travels we have recorded. It is possible to zoom in so much that our 'followers' can often see which camp site we are in. In remote areas (especially canyons) it can be a bit confusing as it is possible to get out of sight from the satellites so tracking points get a bit less than exact.

I have a HAM license too and carry a portable 2 meter 'talki. But I'd guess that would have even less coverage to repeaters than a cell phone. 2 meters doesn't go far. Maybe on 40 or 80 meters, but what a hassle setting up and taking down antennas.

I'll guess that you will have cell coverage while traveling such that you can stay in touch with your family. Your issue in Canada may be your cell phone plan.

Safe travels.....
