I'm considering replacing the battery in my 2022 Grand Design Reflection with 2 6 volt golf cart batteries. If I do, will the existing on board battery charger work with the 2 golf cart batteries?

Thanks,
Dan Pace

The weight, longevity and cost will be lower if you use lithium iron battery's. life expectancy of 10 years and 200 amp hours of full discharge power for $400. compare that with $1200 for 200ah for a depth of discharge of 100-140 amp hours with lead acid deep cycle. not to mention the shorter life, higher weight, larger size and out gassing

Just sayin

Yes, they should work fine.

As stated previously, they are the "old school" technology of longer battery life.

We went to the golf cart batteries 10 years ago and just replaced the first set 2 years ago. Those were refurbished batteries. I am not an electrician so I can't say if the charger is truly adequate or not.I can only say we have had no problem in 10 years. This time we went with the Trojan golf cart batteries as I have read nothing but good things about them.

Our Trojan batteries cost us a little over 200 dollars. If they last us 10 years that I believe they will, I will be happy. I have never run out of power even when boon docking. I do have a 100 wat solar panel that keeps them up fine. The panel is on a long heavy wire so I can place it where I want, like where the sun is shining.

I had the 6v golf car batteries in my last trailer. They were terribly heavy. Needed water added, and still couldn’t discharge fully. They did give me more capacity than the marine grade 12v batteries my trailer came with and whatever converter works with a 12v will work with a couple 6v.

When I purchased the 6v, lithium was very costly. Now, while they’re still expensive, they become much more reasonable due to so much competition among manufacturers.

With this trailer I went with a couple 100ah lithium batteries. Much better. Lighter weight and no maintenance. One negative is that your converter needs to be compatible with lithium or you won’t get a full charge on them. Even then it may leave you with more AH’s available since they can discharge to nearly zero without damage. A second negative is if the lithiums are cold soaked to sub freezing temps they’ll need to be heated to charge. For us, this is maybe a couple times a year so not a huge deal and happens when we’ve been on shore power with full batteries to start.

I used to be a huge proponent of 6 volt batteries.
Not any more. Th advantages of lithiums are just too numerous.
As the price has come down, LA batteries just do not make sense in todays world....
Having said that, I have owned a lot of them.Trojans and Costcos.
Costco is the best bang for the buck.

Your charger will work for any of them.... If that is what is stopping you from going lithium,,,do not worry. That charger will work fine with them. IT WILL NOT HURT THE LITHIUMS! When it dies, get a lithium one for even better performance

I converted my 2670MK several years ago. The converter charges them well. A previous other brand trailer had a bit of an issue - when the batteries were very low, the current the converter tried to supply was too high, and an in-line fuse blew. The wire used for the circuit was a bit too small. The dealer's solution was to replace the fuse with a self resetting circuit breaker. At high current it might blow, but after a brief time it would reset itself, and with the then lower current demand, charging would continue. As I said, this has not been an issue with my Grand Design. Just bring it up as a possibility to watch for.
But, when these die, I will jump on the lithium train...
