Crossing the Canadian border with a cat

The issue seems to be the re-entry into the US. Driving to Alaska means crossing into Canada, then back into the US in Alaska, back into Canada and finally back into the US. That means that we have to know the rules for both countries. We're still researching this.

I love the Canadian people and count many as good friends. The Canadian government, not so much. I go every fall to hunt.

I understand this new rule was put in place by the US government, not the Canadian government. We have been travelling to the US for many years with our dog(s) who have a microchip and all vaccines. We have yet to be asked by either Canadian or US border guards to see his vaccine papers. The new rules implemented by the US government, if enforced are going to be a real pain for Canadian snowbirds.

Will the CDC be refunding the roughly $500 we spent right before we left in late-June to get our dog “in spec” for the original new requirements? Never mind the unnecessary additional chip and rabies booster the dog endured? These CDC people are idiots. At least they figured that out, at least for now.

YOU CAN ASK, BUT I DON'T LIKE YOUR ODDS. :mad:Never mind the unnecessary additional chip and rabies booster the dog endured? These CDC people are idiots. AMEN and AMEN. At least they figured that out, at least for now.

The USDA website to fill out Health Certificates is horrible, glitchy and tech support is non-existent. The State of Florida farmed out the online purchase of hunting and fishing licenses to a private company and it works well. Wonder why.

CDC dog import form

I have heard lots of stuff about what you need and don't need to get my dog back into the US from a Canada trip.
So I called up the US Immigration at Sault Ste Marie where we will be returning.
According to them, after Aug 1, you need:
  • rabies vaccination certificate,
  • microchip # (probably on the rabies certificate),
  • CDC dog import form - search for the CDC dog import form in your favorite browser, fill it out online and they send you an authorization in 10-15 minutes. Good for six months. Free and painless. They do want to know your passport # so have that handy.

I am also taking along the dog's file folder just in case but they may not even ask for the information above.

We just crossed from Canada back to the US at the Rooseville location (Montana) on August 6. After all the stress and cost getting our 12 year old Border Terrier “compliant” with the original “new” rules, the US Customs agent looked at our passports, commented that we had a cute dog, and welcomed us back to the US. Couldn’t have been more than a 2 minute interaction.
