Wow thats insane. I've been reading around and find that you're on the high end but it's not at all unbelievable. An aux tank is one of my big motivators. We've been finding our travels and desires lead us through paths with rural stations with questionable lot access and fuel quality so being able to put 100gal in the TV somewhere reputable and then only have to worry about bathroom breaks and some random romps for the dogs seems appealing.
I'm leaning heavily towards the DRW as I don't want to wind up being undersized again in the future and the aforementioned aux tank wishes.
The only concern I have is our last trip out we would have fit on all of the two tracks and forest service roads I was willing to take a brand new truck down.. but some of the trailheads were really tight in a SRW. We primarily camp for access to hiking destinations so this is my big reservation before I pull the trigger this week.
So far, we’ve only had to forgo one road that we wanted to travel down, but couldn’t without white knuckles. It was west of Multnoma Falls in Oregon. We don’t normally do forest service roads tho. We usually always manage to find a parking spot, but have to search sometimes around busy attractions. Backing in to parking spots normally gets the wide hips of the dually out of reach of the doors on adjacent cars.
Some of my heavier pin weight is the model genny that I have. It’s a QD8000 and is about 150lbs heavier than the QG5500 that normally goes in a 310. I wanted a diesel because I knew I was going to have an aux tank in the back of the truck. I also have a small 22 gal alum tank sitting right beside the genny, but rarely have to put much in it from the aux tank.
The aux tank makes everything so much easier. Mine is 110 gal, but unless we are going into a fuel-price-unfriendly area, I usually only put 80-90 gal in it. That way if we have to park in an unlevel area, there isn’t any risk of the vent leaking fuel. It eliminates a lot of fuel stops, let’s you find the best prices, and let’s you stick with the bigger stations/truck stops.
