Dealing with Tollroads / Tolls

As we prepare for our first season out and about, I been pondering how most of you handle toll roads and am looking for any suggestions. I know there are many toll pass systems that can be purchased (EZ Pass, SunPass, etc.) although no one system covers every state. Do you use such systems or just pay cash or card at the toll roads you encounter? Thank you in advance.

I use the "GoToll" app on my Iphone, so far, I only used it once in Florida. It worked great. Check the participating states.

We have both the EZ and Sun pass, both did not support the other back when we had purchased. We add money for a running balance, refill as needed as opposed to them billing our card at will

We have used EZ-Pass in many of the eastern states. It works well, you pre-load an amount on your account, and the system charges our cc an amount we set once our balance falls below a certain level. EZ-Pass (that we got in Florida) does not have any fees (you have to buy the transponder) whether the account is active every month or not. We recently signed up for the K-Tag system (no charge for the tag) which covers Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and some of Colorado (I've heard). This system isn't supposed to have any fees either. I believe you get a bill or notification of a bill and go in and pay it (we haven't used it yet so not 100% on that).
One other note... many toll roads are removing the pay booths and they just capture your license plate if you don't have a valid transponder/tag and either send you a notice or there are signs informing you that you must log into their website to get your bill.
An additional note, our EZ-Pass account allows us to change the license plate on file so we can move the transponder from one vehicle to another (K-Tag is a sticker and is for one vehicle only).

I have EZ-Pass. I just stick it it’s the window and go, it always seems to bill correctly wether pulling the trailer or not. I have not used in FL yet, it is supposed to work on some of the roads here but I haven’t had a need for it yet. It works fine in just about every other state from IL to ME and everything in between.

EZ Pass. I have all the tags of my motor vehicles and the trailers listed on my account. Why trailers you ask?? I was getting violations on the Delaware River Bridge everytime I crossed with a trailer. After speaking with them on the phone, I was advised to list the trailers so that the system will recognize my account and charge accordingly instead of sending it out as a violation. I have not had an issue since.
I run east coast, Maine to Florida to TN and have not had an issue in a long time.
One thing I don't like is they will change the amount of replenishment based on usage and costs. Most the time it will replenish with $25 but when hauling the triaxle Momentum it will jump to $80.

We have EZ-Pass Plus (from Florida). But Florida just announced a newer pass that, I think, covers a few more roads and is prepared to handle some kind of third format of wireless (or Bluetooth) that is suppose to be coming in the future.

I'm not sure how folks out of state can get one of these passes.

So far the EZ-Pass Plus has worked most places. Where it doesn't work we just keep on driving and usually get a bill later on. I recall that there was a bridge in Spokane that it that way, and I think there may be some highways in Colorado that do the same; those are generally 'bill by plate' spots.

Have EZ-Pass but that is not accepted on the Kansas Turnpike. Every other state we went through was not a problem since many states out west have no tolls.

I go EZ-pass through Pa. In Pa you get a discount on tolls not sure what the percentage is but close to 50%.

Did you know it automatically determines whether you are pulling a trailer? So, you put both into the account but it charges accordingly when you have the trailer and when you don't. Works great.
So mistakenly, I had never added the trailer to my EZ-Pass account. Was wondering why the I-90 tolls were so low - never mailed me anything so mistakenly, I figured must be the same toll amount - NOT. Then when GD had the rig pulled to Elkhart, I started getting letters from NY, OH, MA, etc. based upon picture of the plate on the trailer. That's when I added the trailer to the account.

Did not know that. Thanks for the heads up. Currently I kept the unused responder in the Faraday package in the glove box.
I only know because I called when I bought it. The instructions didn't say anything about what to do about a trailer so the lady explained it to me. I've used it many times going down to FL for the winter so have lots of testing with and without the trailer and it works every time. Quite convenient.

I've had mine for years. They told me I needed the 2 transponders because the weight of my truck and trailer pushed me into a commercial account. I never drive truck separately on toll road so I didn't really care. I carry both but only use the 1. Just had the news on and story on turnpike said they have removed all toll booths and are using a gantry system. Rates are $1.09 when you pass under and .07/ mile. Without EZ Pass it's $2.19 when you pass one, didn't catch the per mile amount.

When I called about mine they said I needed 2, but that was about 8 years ago. Glad that has changed.

Okay, it must have changed; I have only had mine two years. Wonder if you should call first in case the transponders need to be updated? I wouldn't think so but might be best to just check.
