Do I need a 3500 or will the Ram 2500 do it

We are looking at the Reflection 150 line up and will either be going with the 226RK or the 260RD, and wanted to see if my 2022 Ram 2500 Gas Hemi 6.4 could handle it or should I be planning on upgrading to a 3500 truck.

My Numbers from the stickers on the truck are:

3.73 Axel Ratio
Max Payload: 3110 LB
GVWR: 10,000 LB
GAWR Front: 5500 LB
GAWR Rear: 6390 LB
Gross Combined Weight Rating: 22000bLB
Max Tow Capacity: 14760 LB

Passenger & Cargo Weight: About 700 LB (could be lighter - but this is the max)

18K Hitch: 225 LB


When I run the numbers I appear to be close but not over, but I just estimating the Pin Weight on these to be 20% of the fully loaded trailers (which should be roughly 2,000 lbs).
If the pin weight is low please let me know, so I don't make the same mistake twice.

You should have more than enough with a 2500.
 
I have a Ram 3500/6.4 and believe you will only have possible negatives going with a 2500 over a 3500. They are basically the same truck other than the suspension. The 2500 will have a coil spring suspension instead of the leaf springs. A lot of people say the coils have a sway to them and don't feel as stable when towing. The trucks share a lot of the same components so maintenance cost will be about the same. Registration fees could be a higher cost on the 3500 depending on the state you live in. I registered mine at a lower GVW to avoid having truck tags and losing my tax credit (basically keeping it from being a commercial vehicle).

The only downside to the 3500 is the ride, If that matters to you. I run 50 psi in my tires when not towing and if feels comfortable. Some run 40-45 psi. I'm not concerned about the ride because the truck is for truck stuff.

If you go with a 3500 and ever upgrade to a larger camper you will have the most truck you can get without going to a dually.

Advertised max payload will be completely different from the truck you actually buy.

You will need to look at the actual payload/ carrying capacity of the truck you are looking to buy.
 
Huntr70, I currently own the 2500 and the numbers reported are all from my personal vehicle. My actual payload per the sticker is 3110 lb. so this is real world not just spec sheet numbers.

You will be fine with a 150 Series.

Your current 2500 is fine for this task for either of these rigs. For the larger rig at GVWR hitch and 700 pounds in the cab with 22% pin weight you are a touch over on payload but not much.

260rd gvwr 9995 (rounded is 10k)
Truck payload 3110
Hitch 225
People and stuff 700
Pin weight based on trailer GVWR and 22% is 2200

2200+225+700=3125

If you base pin weight @ 20% pin weight is 2k
Based on that you are at 2925.

Either way I say you are good.
