Guys, ROOKIE 5th wheeler here. Went camping a couple of weeks ago and saw some not all 5th wheels had a King Pin Stabilizer. Is that something I need for short, long trips or all the time?
If you are talking about the tripod thing that goes on your kin pin while un-hooked, I have never used one and haven't found that our trailer shakes enough to need/want one. Once the level up system has done its job we are pretty steady.
If you don't feel enough movement to bother you, then no need for one.
We have one and normally use it. Seems to help stabilize the unit slightly even with the 6 point leveling system. Like the above poster said especially when doing laundry.
On the other hand it is a complete PITA to pack around and setup. Never really fits anywhere nicely when moving from place to place.
I have gone both ways, at first we did not have one, and the movement was not that bad. The only reason I did buy one was that we left the unit in storage using the hydraulic six point lift to help keep the tires off ground. I felt that the stabilizer would help, if the hydraulics bled down. I do not think the benefit under normal circumstances justifies the additional expense and storage issue.
We just started testing one, and it seems to have reduced the felt movement when the washer is running. That was what we were interested in, and it seems to be working for that purpose.
