Do you bring spare keys with you on the road?

Have a truck/trailer set up. I was thinking it would probably be a good idea to put a spare set of trailer keys in my truck glove box and was thinking maybe a spare truck key in one of those realtor style lockboxes clipped to something unoffending in the undercarriage.

Anyone do something similar or have a better plan(besides don't lose your damn keys!)? Do you keep your truck keys and trailer keys on the same key ring or keep them separate? Spares?

I bring spare keys for everything that is truck/trailer related........but I ain't tellin' you where I hide them! :pound:

We bring the extra keys with us but we each keep a set on our person when away from the trailer or truck. I used to leave a set of trailer keys locked in the truck but after a friend had their truck broken into, the trailer keys stolen and used to enter the trailer I stopped doing that.

Edit: This depends upon the age and features of the truck but hiding a key makes it easier for someone to intercept the fob codes that they can then use to break into or steal your truck.

I have 5 sets of trailer keys on the road. One for each of us to carry. One stashed in the truck. One screwed to metal in an out of the way part of the trailer. One I clip onto the truck keys when we are camping.

I have an extra dumb key that just opens the door of my truck screwed to the frame underneath, with an extra standard key and fob inside the truck. My truck has keypad entry as well.

It’s so easy to put keys in a jacket and leave it in the truck or something similar when you are camping.

My husband has a set of keys for both truck & trailer. I, also, have a set. There's an additional set of trailer keys in the truck.

Really? Do they use a scanner or something and when the fob is in a lockbox on the frame, it picks up the signal or frequency?

This is my fear. Between being new campers AND wrangling small kids, I can 100% see me locking myself out or worse, losing keys this year. Lol.

I've always had three sets at least for the trailer and both fobs for the TV. Came in handy when we left Newport, TN year before last. Made a last minute check pulled half way out of our site and left the trailer keys on the picnic table. Didn't notice until we arrived in NC only to find that one of the remaining sets from the dealer were for someone else's rig. Campground found mine and mailed them home to me.

We keep a set of keys in each vehicle... being TV, town car, and.... DWs purse Never know when we might lose the trailer set or dtive a different vehicle (got 2 others we could use) to check on the RV while in the covered storage facility.

We each carry a full set of keys with us at all times.

Our first vehicle with a "smart" key was our 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. I asked the dealer for a plain key that would unlock the door. He wanted to know why. He said the smart key would do it. I asked him how it would work with the key locked inside and a dead battery. They gave me a plain key that I kept in my wallet.

Anyone who doesn't carry several spare keys is guilty of not thinking ahead. I ordered 6 extra keys for the trailer, and an extra key fob for the Dodge. Never been an issue and mostly the extra keys get used because they are scattered throughout the trailer, and we just grab the key that's closest to hand.

Several years ago while pheasant hunting in the middle of South Dakota, miles from anywhere, we had to rest a dog and put it in the truck. The dog immediately stepped on the lock button. Of course the keys where sitting on the center console. Ever since then, on every vehicle I’ve owned, there is a key wired to the frame, camper as well. Also spare keys in the tHe truck and camper.

I tried the magnetic key boxes with varied success, lost a couple.

I have jeep, truck, RV and other keys in the RV. I keep a spare RV key in a magnetic waterproof box. That box mounted so that it can't move (eg magnets and zip tie.) As long as I can get to the RV, I have extras of all of the other keys in a kitchen drawer.

The one and only time I locked the keys in the RV, my extra key was locked in the jeep. When you are in this situation, do you break a jeep window, call AAA to unlock the jeep, or call a locksmith to unlock the RV? Fortunately, a nearby friend was a locksmith and was able to pick the RV door lock (in seconds.) That is when I moved the key to someplace that I can get to it without keys.

“Stealing or intercepting” the fob codes isn’t possible.

Sounds like most of us are in the same boat and do carry spare keys. I installed combo locks on the storage bay doors so have a spare key hidden in there and since I use a combination to get into the storage bay, it's always accessible to us. I also keep an additional spare key locked in a center console lock box. We also have a safe bolted down inside the camper for additional truck spare key, however, not really necessary as before the truck is locked we say "see the key" to each other; based on past experience (and the truck has the combo lock on the door so that helps). :)

Yes, they normally need to get within 10-15 feet of an actual key to copy the signal and basically clone their own key. Having a key on the vehicle or hanging on a hook inside the house door can be enough for them to capture the code. watch this video - it is one of many out there but covers most of the salient points in the shortest time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIveLwq0p5o
