Planning a trip to New England next fall. Suggestions on must see things for Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, ect. Also suggestions on campgrounds, Harvest Hosts, or any place we should stay. Thanks

Keep in mind that campgrounds and many attractions in New England close the Saturday after Columbus Day. This is sometimes while the colors are still very good.

On Sunday night and Monday of Columbus Day weekend, the interstate traffic heading back to Boston can be mind-boggling. Be sure you are parked and not trying to leave then.

Kancamagus Highway is amazing scenery with several waterfalls within easy walks.

We loved our trip to Burlington, VT in October (7-10). The colours were incredible. We lucked out and saw what they call ‘snowliage’, when it snows at the top of Stowe mountain. We took the gondola to the top to experience. So many great fall colour drives in the area.

We were there at the same time. The snow was pretty cool above the colors. We went to Mt. Washington and saw rime ice at the summit.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a good time and great place to visit

Hard to go wrong in those states at that time of year. What kind of campgrounds do you prefer? @jkwilson mentioned the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. There are some great state and federally-run campgrounds there, but they don't tend to have much in the way of hookups.

We are open to any and all campgrounds. We had a 36ft fifth wheel previously but have since sold that and bought a 2021 Imagine 2600RB. Just bought it this year and its set up with lthium batteries and other things for boondocking.

You should be all set for many of the campgrounds in the White Mountains, great camping with much to do. A trip up the Cog Railway or the Franconia Tram on a clear day yields spectacular views.

Hey thanks for the info. Definitely things we would like to do. My wifes dad is going with us. He is 90 and just wants to see the colors up there. He also is a big fan of train rides and such. Good stuff

For the cog railway, try to book as early as you are confident of reasonably clear weather. It’s a busy place.

Many towns in Vermont have a waterfall right in the center of town.

Vermont Country Store is a neat stop if you are in the area. Tourist trap, but worth a stop.

Acadia is impressive.

The Lakes Region of New Hampshire is beautiful. On Golden Pond was filmed on Squam Lake.

The area of Gloucester, Rockport and Manchester-by-the-sea is a neat area of old fishing towns. The movie Manchester-by-the-sea was filmed mostly in Rockport IIRC.

Newport, Rhode Island has incredible mansions.

Upstate NY is beautiful.

We spend at least a week up there every year. We have two kids who live in the Boston area and we extend our visits.

Thank you for all the info. These are great things to know for planning. I see your in SW Indiana. We are just north of Cincinnati so not to far from you.
