Fifth Wheel hitch Question

So I've owned a number of bumper pull TT in the last 40 years, however the Reflection 26RL is my first fifth wheel purchase. I've had the unit out 2-3 times and I've notice my hitch has a "clunk" in it. My question is: How much play should I expect between the fifth wheel coupler and the king pin.

What kind of hitch do you have? Sometimes the clunking, or chucking, can be from loose attachment points of the hitch to the truck, or other bolts on the hitch that aren’t torqued to spec. Could be some play in the jaws and pin connection as well but the others are where I would start.

None that I've ever experienced. What hitch are you running?

We have a Curt 16k slider as well, and were advised by the installing hitch shop that, depending a lot on road conditions, to expect some "clunking". Apparently with the Curt, the clunking is caused by the built-in "play" between the quick disconnect pins which hold the hitch to the mounting rails, and is considered to be "normal" . My hitch came with a model #16900 spacer kit, consisting of 4 rectangular rubber spacers that mount between the hitch and the rails, hopefully to minimize the clunking. I have delayed the installation of the spacer kit yet, as both our 2017 Ram 3500 and our 2018 303RLS are brand new, so haven't experienced the clunking situation yet - first trip in the spring will tell the tale !

I did install the rubber spacers. I am now in the process of checking everything out with regards to all hardware.

I had a curt A20 to tow my solitude and it had bad clunking. Working with curt they sent a new hitch to try but same thing. In the end they stated it was normal, due to their tolerances. I have had a Reese Titan before and it was quiet. This is why I was thinking there might be something wrong. I ended up buying a B&W Companion and it is as quiet as can be. Overall it is the design of to much tolerance in the curt designs and is not going to go away. My Reese was in a universal rail system where the curt and B&W are in a factory pick system. Ended up selling the Curt because there was nothing more Curt could or would do because they considered it normal.
