50ft-lb on the nut is not enough to seat a press fit race.

No, it's not, but it is what is frequently recommended. The bearing should be fully seated, so, IMO of course, the 50 ft.lbs. is an arbitrary number.

Dexter service manual states initially seat the axle nut to 50 ft lbs and then back off and finger tight .. been doing it that way for the last 50 years..

That was the number recommended by Dodge when I did one of the front wheels on my old truck. Heck you have to have some kind of number.

And I should have expanded and said the bearing races should be solidly seated before adding the roller bearing.
