Furrion MPPT 25A continually resetting to Sealed

Greetings,
This has been discussed before, but wanted to see if anyone has had more recent success in solving it.

I recently installed a 280 AH LiFePo battery, switched my charge profile on the Furrion MPPT 25A charge controller to Lithium, and everything worked great. However, after some time, the Furrion controller reverts back to Sealed charging profile indicated by the gold light (vs the green light lithium setting). I believe this happens each night after the sun goes down, but not 100% sure as I don't live near the TT to check it regularly.

Furrion (Lippert) said I could fix this by doing a factory reset. I removed all power (solar first followed by 12V) from the unit, and let it sit for a while. Then reinstalled it, and reset the charger to factory settings by pushing the button for 5 seconds. Its then started up in Sealed, but I switched it to Lithium. Again, after some time, it switched back to Sealed.

From everything I read on this forum, it seems the only solution is to replace it with Victron or a newer Furrion charge controller. Has anyone had success solving the issue without having to replace the Furrion?

Thanks

Sorry, John, I don't think there's any magic fix for the Furrion controllers. The Victrons are great but pricey, Renogy and others also make good solar controllers if you decide to replace it. The other option would be to accept the sealed setting, it won't fully charge your lithium battery, nor would it harm it.

Thank you for your reply. I didn't realize that the battery would still be charged to some extent on the sealed mode. I've been fretting about having the battery drained by the parasitic draw after a few days. But just to confirm, it's your understanding that there will be some charging effect by the sealed setting? Thanks again for your reply.

Yes, in sealed mode the charge controller will charge until a certain voltage is reached, somewhat above 13 volts (the exact amount slips my mind). With the lithium profile, the charge would continue until about 14.4 volts. So the controller would still charge your battery, the difference is about 20 to 25% of your battery's capacity. So you'll still be getting charged to about 80% of capacity. It might be good to test with a multimeter to see what's coming in from the panels and to/from the battery. Also, pay attention to polarity, some have found the leads reversed coming from the factory.

I am confused as to whether you are talking about the converter charger or the MPPT solar charger. If you are talking about the solar charger you should check out the Victron equivalent 100/30 MPPT solar charge controller. It’s only $123 on Amazon and it’s way better.

There are a lot of interpretations as to what is pricy. To me $150 bucks for a $50,000 trailer isn't much. Especially when the fellow dumped $500 in a lithium battery.

The lipert/furrion solar controller is horrible, I fought with mine for a month or two. Every day I would fuss with it to get it to switch to lithium only to have it reset overnight. The autodetect converter/charger never switched to lithium because, according the WFO, it needs to be less than 10 feet from the battery and have a heavier gage wire connecting the two than grand design installed. I screwed with that for far to long.

The biggest thing you will be missing by not replacing the furrion controller is the high charge current the lithium mode provides. a lead acid battery has three parts to the charge bulk, absorption and float. The weak point is getting the battery topped up as in the lead acid profile the float will tail off the current as the battery reaches a specific voltage.

In a nutshell a lithium charge profile may fully charge your battery in 4 hours, where the lead acid may take 8 under full sun. this becomes problematic on cloudy days or higher latitudes.

The biggest thing to remember is your batterys do not need to be fully charged every day, they just need to meet your over night consumption needs.

On my previous 2022 2500RL I had the same issue after installing 2 - 100AH LiFePo batteries. I called Lippert and explained the problem after they recommended the reset solution. Apparently there is an issue with some of the 25A MPPTs from then. They sent a new replacement for no charge. I would try again with Lippert if I were you.

Did that fix the problem?

Yes it did

Yes it did!
You were fortunate. Lippert/Furrion did not stand by their product in my exchange. I just went back and forth with their customer service department on the issue of the controller reverting back to factor setting after some time when setting to Lithium. I did all their troubleshooting suggestions, answered all their questions, and even sent back all the details on my RV only to be told that...sorry, the product isn't under warranty any more but you can call the part department and order another one...really! Like I'm going to buy any more of their products that they don't stand behind. Anyway, thanks for allowing the rant. I just ordered the Victron MPPT 50A w/Bluetooth from Amazon for about $170.00.
