Gas versus Diesel - Maintenance.

I watched the video a few day ago and thought it was spot on. What do you disagree with ?
I also agree but it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know.
The 1991 Dodge/Cummins D250 had only 1 "electronic control". That was the temperature sender that cycled the Grid heater (which could easily be disconnected and not disable the engine).

After having many of the issues pointed out in the vid over the last 300k miles we have on modern diesel trucks, I too am on the fence re: diesel vs gas.

What has exacerbated this problem is 1)Tech/shop availability and 2)parts availability. In my experience, both of these are post-pandemic events.

As an engineer & consumer, I fully agree that this added complexity and EPA mandated design results in a less reliable vehicle. However, the gas product is just not an option when towing 10k+ lbs trailer cross country.

His last idea is spot on, we are essentially paying for performance.

Knowing that doesn’t help quell my fear of having problems on the road and being able to find a shop that can provide an effective solution in a timely manner.

Yeah, I think that video I linked to was spot on. The guy who made it is a pretty knowledgeable tech based on some of his other videos I've seen.

Carbon from the EGR is a real thing and so are many of the emission systems issues. This is why diesel truck emissions deletions are such a big business the last few years, though illegal, and the EPA is cracking down on it where they can.

That said, I don't think the message from the video was don't buy a modern diesel. If you need the power for what you are towing, by all means buy one. Just don't expect it to be as dependable, last as long and be as trouble free as the simpler ones used to be.

I grew up on a farm with tractors and trucks, trucks were gas back then. Never is a long time, but,,, i never saw a tractor or combine broken down in the field. Now going back to my northern farm area hometown for the summer, i see tractors in the field quite often not hooked up to anything waiting for repair. As well as the farm i help for harvest, has lots of diesel trucks and semi's. When a tractor is sitting or a truck is missing, i just ask why, and 90% of the time its emissions related.

Im all for clean air, but there has to be a better way on the diesels.

Its not a matter of if, but when one will have a problem with the modern emissions diesels. I did on my 2015 ram cummins, and it gets expensive out of pocket.

Maintenance/wear parts, with the gasser is simple.

Simplicity at its best. No turbo, no turbo moving vanes, turbo actuator, no adjusting valves at some point, no ccv filter to change, no def fluid, no anti gel when cold out, no def pump or. scr to go bad, no dpf to plug, no egr or egr parts, no glow plugs/grid heater.
Gasser, this one, has no cylinder deactivation, or start stop stuff, doesnt even have an egr, just simple.
No exhaust brake, i lived without one before my second diesel, and ill live just fine now without one.
