Hello all,

I am beginning my initial research on GD travel trailer models, tt or toy hauler (touring motorcycle).

Only model information summary I could find gave me a 404 error.

Is there any model summary information out there folks could share?

Currently own a thor class c on the ford transit chassis, looking to make the change to towing.

I just upgade my tow vehicle to a new ram 2500 hd.

I would like to stay away from the lippert slide system as we have had issues with ours and are aware of their limitations.

Thanks!

Make sure the payload of your 2500 is up to the task. Some are very low

Have you looked on the Grand Design website?

They have pretty good models descriptions and specs on there.

Never had an error with their website....

With a 2500 tow vehicle you will be severely limited as to the size of a toy hauler, probably to the point where you can’t haul a touring mc in it.

LOL.....that's news to me. My previous TH which was a 34 1/2' "other brand" had a little over 3600 lb of payload capacity. I hauled two motorcycles all the time, plus a roll-a-round tool chest, plus 30 gallons of fuel, plus a bunch of other stuff. The truck that towed that and was not over the measly payload of 2143 lbs, was in fact a F250 diesel

I would think that the above comments are probably referring to 5th wheel toyhaulers.

Bumper pull toyhaulers should be fine...

With a payload of 2143 lbs, you wouldn't touch any of the 5th wheel versions.

Exactly correct, and that is the reason I got rid of the F250 and bought a F350 Dually with 5270 lbs of payload capacity, because I knew I was going to get a bigger trailer...........this one in fact.

The OP referenced looking for travel trailers/TH, so I posted up about the tow behind TH that I had.

If you’re looking for a bumper pull, then you’re looking at the G series. There’s not much variation in all of the models to be honest, just have a careful look at the floorplans. Yes, they may throw in a couch or a longer garage or maybe even a dinet, but otherwise, the layouts are very similar.

Really it starts with the length that you want to deal with. Since you’re going bumper pull, the RAM 2500 should be fine even with its coil springs. However, watch out some of the larger ones have ridiculous tongue weights well over 2000 pounds. Even my little 25G can run up to 2000 lbs when nothing in the back. You can very quickly eat up a 2500’s cargo capacity with just the tongue weight.

The next issue is the complete and utter lack of storage on the bumper pull models. There is literally just a vertical closet at the front of most of them. So what this means is you’ll be putting a ton of cargo in your bed of your pick up which again will eat up a ton of your cargo capacity.

You can certainly save some weight by skipping the generator option, and to be honest nowadays you can get killer Honda generators with freaking Bluetooth control that will run the entire rig without issue. Much smaller, quieter and you can put it in your pick up bed. there is something to be said for resale value about having the built-in generator though. Skipping the generator gives you a bunch of storage under the bed.

Go hit a dealership lot and look at the differences in the two bedrooms they offer one has the bathroom right at the front and one is the bathroom in a tandem configuration like the 25G. We preferred the tandem configuration because it gave a larger bedroom and more interior storage.

I don’t know if they’ve moved away from Schwintek yet on the new models but honestly, not a big deal they just need good maintenance and an understanding of how the system works.

These trailers till much better with weight in the back. Yes, you could fill the gas tank but it’s only a 30 gallon typically and the water tanks are generally over top of the axles but filling them does help a little bit. You also need to watch on the smaller models that a toy will utterly fill the trailer, so using the fridge etc when traveling can be a pain, with a side by side forget it, your not getting in unless you put out the slide. In hindsight I wish we had gotten a longer model but then it would not fit in the driveway, the 25G is just on the cusp of fitting into state/provincial parks where anything larger restricts the sites you can get into.

We love ours but will be moving to a 5th wheel toy hauler next, the lack of storage is just too big of a deal.

Also a word of caution, these G series are not Momentum M series… they are built in a **** of a rush and you WILL have a bunch of issues right of the gate (horrible plumbing with plastic fittings, wrong side flexible soft tubing, leaking storage doors, slide seals that may be installed incorrectly, etc etc etc). Everything is fixable without too much effort (this forum is awesome for that) but just be aware these are not top of the line models so expect issues.

We’ve gotten ours nearly to the point of where it should have been out of the factory but I still have a ton of plumbing to replace with brass connecters and proper pex tubing in place of the soft hose… just buy a whole bunch of Amazon Wi-Fi water, leak detectors and sprinkle them everywhere and fix the leaks appear. Lol.

The biggest difference with RAM 2500’s is they are all coil spring… it’s an off-road toy, not a hauling pickup. GM and Ford still use leaf springs on their 2500/250 models and some even have the full overload springs. It’s a night and day difference when towing heavy.

The RAMs tend to have a bunch of options cutting into the payload cap. Power Wagons while awesome off-road are massively low on payload. Love them but they are just not made for heavy towing.

One of the reasons I went straight to a 3500 as well, talked to many 2500 owners who loved their trucks but hated it when towing (if heavy tongue weight) Ford F250 guys had no idea what we were talking about, theirs towed just fine lol.

Thanks all for your comments!

I'll compare models then check them out at a local dealer.

We have a 22 Momentum 21G and really like it. It is lacking in storage but I don't have the generator so that's extra outside storage. I really do like having the portable generator vs the built in for several reasons.

We really like the ramp/deck patio with 3 season doors.
We also have not had many problems with the trailer yet (knock on wood). I do carry lots of tools and plumbing equipment to fix leaks.

I tow it with a Ram 1500 hemi and 8 speed transmission with no problems. Depending on how we pack I can maintain my payload limit (barely). You be fine with the 3/4 ton truck which I recommend on these Momentum G class.
Good luck in your search!

If disc brakes are available on the model anyone chooses I strongly suggest ordering them. The HD suspension that comes with them is a big bonus too.

I disagree. My coil spring Ram 2500 can handle more weight than my BIL’s leaf spring Ram 2500. 3k pin of my previous fifth wheel only squatted my truck to level. My BIL tows a fifth wheel that has an under 2k pin and it squats down the overloads to nose high.

Do you still have your 25 “G” ? We are looking at this model as we have a Polaris RZR. What are your likes and dislikes of this model? I realize that there is minimal storage. Thanks for any replies.

Yes still have our 25G and will likely for a few years to come. Now that GD has indicated solid roofs and independent suspension as standard, I’d be waiting for those to fully bake into the product line.

The 25G is still (to us) the perfect non-fifth wheel toy hauler. Small enough to fit in state/provincial parks and other areas, enough room inside for some side by sides (though my Can Am Outlander Max pretty much eats the entire inside, lots of space for storage around it but not enough for a second ATV).

Biggest for us is the bathroom layout, cannot stand how the bathroom eats into the bedroom on the other layouts, 25G so far is the only one with this layout. Also makes working on the plumbing a breeze as everything is basically under the kitchen sink (just redid 90% of mine getting rid of soft hose and putting my own homemade pex manifold in).

I installed a storage box on the tongue so that helps storage somewhat, will add solid steps and then get a storage box under the door, installing rear hitch and eventually will get some sort of under hanging storage drawer (the Lippert one is terrible from that I can see but may work for hoses etc). Planning to add a rear wedge tail storage compartment like on the bigger toy haulers, great idea that they didn’t put on this model. Gives a place for tie down straps etc.

Ripping out the walls in the front storage area and cleaning up the wiring gives you a bunch more room as well, should have done this from day one.

Razor should fit nicely, just put down something like Armor-All soft garage floor mat to save the floor from damage and mud/etc.

Counter tops and table are not solid surface, that will be a future fix if we end up keeping this for a long term. Just be careful around them and fix any that start to pull away right away before they crack.

If you don’t need the on board generator you get a great storage spot for outdoor furniture. If I bought this again I’d get a Honda 3200 (suitcase model) and skip the onboard. I mostly run LiFePO4 and Solar anyways, so Generator is just for crappy weather weeks. Lots of space on the roof for more panels, we will be 300W stock plus 1200W more added by next summer and still have 400W more on the ground. 1900W should suffice for what we need but could easily go bigger with larger panels, lots of room.

Really wish Alliance, Brinkley, etc would build a competing model so GD would revise the 25G and solve some of the small issues but otherwise we feel they nailed it with the 25G. We spent a few days at a large dealer just wandering the smaller toy haulers and we constantly kept going back to this model. None of the competition in 2022/2023 could touch it for looks, quality and interior. Not sure how things are now but I haven’t seen anything that makes us want to stray away … yet.

To this day when we get setup, rear deck down and patio rocking people still come by and compliment the overall look of it. GD knows how to make things classy both inside and out.

Thank you, that was a great review. We are just looking right now, but Like you, the other brands don’t compare with GD. We are looking at the 25G, and 29G. I like the separate garage & 1/2 bath in the 29G, however, it’s a lot longer.

Starting back in mid 2024 (2025 model years) Momentums & Solitudes (maybe all Grand Designs) have brass fittings and no longer have the incorrect sized nylon flex hoses. All PEX lines.
