Generator for Solitude

Anyone order the generator prep and put in a generator in their Solitude?

We started looking at the Reflection 337 but can't get the 6pt level up system we want in that model which is something we desire. As a result we are now moving to the Solitude line to see if the the 305RE will be a fit for us. One of the other items I would like is an on board generator. This is a nice to have not a must have for us but I'd like to learn more about it. We will travel with two Australian Shepherds and would like the option of running the air conditioning while away from the trailer when not in a spot with electric service.

I see generator prep is an option and wondered if anyone has on their Solitude. If so can you share what generator you put in and where does it go on the unit? Did you get the generator from your GD dealer?

With the prep kit as an option is this a turn key system, meaning is it fully wired into the trailer so its as simple as ordering the prep and then adding the generator? Once done do all of the onboard systems (lights, TV, air conditioning) work by simply flipping a switch like the generators work on a motorhome?

If there is anyone from Grand Design monitoring this thread I would appreciate you weighing in to hel guide us.

Thanks to all, Tigerbug

Hi Tigerbug

I'm pretty sure I know the answers to your questions but I want to make sure. I will have someone respond to your questions tomorrow.

Thank you for considering a Grand Design unit.

I didn't order the generator prep, but I carry a couple of inverter generators with me anytime we are dry camping. I just pull the gens out and hook them up to the trailer. I can run one A/C, the Microwave, all TV's, etc. The only way to camp.

Hi @Tigerbug,

Bill asked me to reply to your question. The Solitude generator prep option includes an automatic transfer switch, the shielding/venting for the installation of an aftermarket propane generator in the front compartment, and the wiring needed to hookup an aftermarket propane generator in the front compartment.

The automatic transfer switch will automatically switch between dock/park power source and a generator.

Hope this helps,
~ Janice

I ordered the prep unit but will buy the generator down the rode. I presently own a Honda 6500is that I use with my present 5ver. It is a little heavy at around 200lbs but I'm able to wheel it around easy presently. It starts and runs everything on my 50 amp trailer on the 120v total setting. It will convert both sides of your board to series . It just adds your total wattage of all your 110 appliances together. It's pretty amazing ! But one day I may not want to lug it around and put in an onan propane model. I dry camp a lot chasing Top level Dirt Series and nascar so it's a must. Will definitely come in handy down the road for sure. If you Dry camp or in your case carry you pets it sounds like a good investment!
