I gave up on the idea of hauling my motorcycles with a 21G and my F150 Hybrid even though it was likely going to work. I just did not want to end up in white knuckle situations! So instead I am selling my truck and picked up a 2024 GMC 2500HD AT4 diesel truck with 11350# GVWR. More than enough muscle to tow the trailer again nicely and now I can not worry about cargo weight anymore. Gonna tow it with a Weigh-Safe medium hitch and 12,500lb springs. While the trailer is 13,000 GVWR, I am likely never gonna be towing it around at full capacity as it has a lot of cargo capacity so the hitch will work great. I have a deposit on the trailer now and will get that set up this weekend or early next week.

Anyway the new GMC trucks have the option to install a trailer camera which is hard wired into the main dash. I like that idea way better than the separate camera I used to have in my fifth wheel, as that extra monitor was always in the way and really hard to see in the daylight. But I am curious how the installation is for those camera systems. Has anyone installed one on a Grand Design travel trailer? They are pre-wired for a rear camera but it is likely the Furrion system I have used before which works, but I want to get rid of that extra monitor.

Also it mentions on the GMC web site for the 2024 2500HD that there is also an internal trailer camera view. Not sure if that means installing a second one of that cameras somewhere inside the rig so I can see my bikes sitting in the trailer? Would not be the worst idea in the world in case something comes loose while in transit. Anyone had any experience with that?

I am hoping I can order it and take it to the RV dealer and get them to do the install before I take the trailer home. I don't need to use it until the end of January, so I have plenty of time to get it sorted out.

You have to run a hard wire from the camera plug on the back of the truck to wherever you are installing the camera. They are not wireless cameras.

Right, I know it's hard wired as I mentioned that in my original post :)

Curious to know who might have installed these on these units and how it works. Also curious about the interior camera and how that works if anyone has used that.

GMC trailer camera set-up on a 2023 25G

Ive got the same issue on my 25G and a 2500 AT-4. I had the GMC camera on my last trailer and had mounted it in the center of the ramp. it worked great but now trying to figure out if I can run the camera where Grand design put theirs (which is above the ramp) or do I drill and mount it in the center of the ramp as I did before. I can tell you that the GMC camera set up rocked!

Good to know! One thing I can’t seem to figure out anywhere is whether the trailer camera will take over the rear view display in the rear view mirror when it is attached or is it only visible on the main dash screen? Seems logical to have to show on the rear view mirror and then I can see GPS and other stuff like tire pressure on the main screen.

But so far I can’t seem to find any information about that.

I used the Dash screen and never thought of using the rear view. If i figure out how to mount mine I'll let you know

It only uses the dash screen. Common sense would say to put it on the mirror for monitoring during travel but no such luck.

Yep that would make way to much sense, just like having a tailgate release button on the console that you can't disable! I tossed the wallet up in the console and wasn't aware that i dropped the tailgate down and had a mess in the HD parking lot.

Doh! Gonna have to remember that one!

On your dash display of your GMC you can toggle through different camera views. Of course the additional camera will need to be installed otherwise your dash display will have that selection grayed out.

We have a 2021 GMC 3500 AT4HD and use the GM camera mounted on the rear of our Reflection 337RLS 5th wheel. I also had this camera mounted on the rear of our previous Reflection 230RL 5th wheel and moved it to this trailer when we traded trailers last year. The camera comes with detailed instructions describing how to mount the camera to allow it to work with the transparent trailer view. Installation requires several hours of work so start early.

Your truck should have the appropriate camera plugs in the trailer connector already, probably in the rear bumper. My camera connections were also on the rear bumper, and a 5th wheel light connector inside the bed. I had to swap them so that i could have the camera connections inside the bed. That required a couple of camera extension cables from Amazon and about an hour to complete.

I did not mount the camera at the Grand Design installed camera mounting location because GM camera is designed to work closer to the ground, at about the same height as the camera in your tail gate. On this trailer I actually mounted the camera just above the window because the 2021 year model trucks are not capable of using transparent camera mode with 5th wheel trailers, only bumper pulls.

The camera is attached to the trailer using light duty double back tape and 1/2" long SS #8 screws. Be sure to put RTV on the screws when screwing them into the fiberglass.

I ran the camera cable along the window frame using double-back taped clips that came with the camera kit. The cable then runs down the ladder, ducks under the trailer, and along the bottom in cushioned cable clamps. The black window frame does a good job of hiding the cable and it is barely noticeable. The clamps came from Home Depot and Lowe's and utilize the original self-taping bolts GD used to attach the bottom trailer cover. The toughest part was routing the cable from the front bay and to the hitch through the inside of the 5th wheel overhang. The whole job took at least 5 hours to complete.

I also have a Yuwei wireless camera that came from Amazon mounted at the Grand Design camera location but that is a whole 'nuther story.

Thanks for the info! I got the camera today and just gonna have the dealer install it. It’s not clear yet where we should put it because as you said the normal location for the Furrion camera is way up high. But installing it on the rear door might be complicated because it’s a toy hauler. Guess we will play around and see.

So why did you also install a wireless camera?

Hi RoscoeTX, Do you have part numbers for the camera and video cables that you purchased?
Thanks, Dave

The extension cables from Amazon to relocate the trailer socket are: Amazon.com and you will need 2 ea. of the 3 foot or 1 meter cables. Prices is $6.49 each when I checked today.

The GM Trailer Auxiliary Camera I used is # 84946379. I bought this camera over 3 years ago for $389 from Gateway Buick GMC in Dallas. However, GM has probably changed to a new part number with a higher price. If you shop around, you should be able to find one at a decent price.

Thank you For the help with this!

I just cannot bring myself to drilling holes in our 337RLS. I made a mount for my camera out of two inch square steel tube. I secured the camera mount to the hitch using u-bolts. I installed rivnuts on the back of the tube and used adel clamps to secure the wiring. I used the existing bolts for the belly cover to run the wiring from the back of the trailer to the front using adel clamps. Still trying to figure out how to best run the camera connection plug from the front of the trailer to the truck connection.

How did you run the connection from the front bay to the hitch??

I swapped the two trailer connectors on the truck, relocating the one at the bumper (that has the camera connectors) to inside the truck bed, and the one in the truck bed to the bumper location. The camera cables were extended to reach the new truck bed location using cables purchased from Amazon.
