GVWR / GAWR and Curb Weight Questions

Hey Manny....I'm close to your same loadout except I have a 2022 280RS and a 2023 Ram 2500 CCSB with the Cummins.

I had a 2021 Ram with a 6.4 and traded because it just sucked in the mountains...literally and figuratively!

I'm looking into hitching options now. Do you use the Turning Point or is it locked? Do you have a SB or LB? What hitch do you use and is it what you would want if you started from scratch? I just know it's going to be much better than my old set up but looking for any real world exp.

Thanks

I had a 16k Pullrite Superglide when we had a fifth wheel. Never a worry as it did all the work. Same truck in my signature. It was a heavy hitch however, at 200lbs +.

We also have a 2024 270BN. First thing I did was to replace the Curt Turning Point hitch with a Gen-Y hitch and installed a B&W underbelly puck system with a removable ball in our 2019 F-350. With two 75lb e-bikes on a 500lb load limit bike rack on the back we loaded all our stuff for a 3 month trip. Thinking we needed to counter/offset the weight of the bikes and rack we loaded the front of the RV with our heavier items. We stopped at a CAT scale, dropped the rig, weighed just the truck, hooked up the rig and did a reweigh. Below were our weights (note: Gen-Y tongue weight should be 10-15% GVWR. My tongue weight was exactly 1600lb or 16% of GVRW. We’ve since relocated some of the heavier items to the rear. Love our new rig and the Gen-Y!

10%-15% sounds awfully low for 5th wheel hitch weight. Generally it is around 20% and higher. Mine is a bit low at 17%.

Have you confused 5th wheel percentages vs bumper pull percentages?

The recommended tongue weight for a Gen-Y torsion fifth wheel hitch depends on the model, but is generally between 10% and 15% of the trailer's total weight:

Strange that the steer axle didn’t change…..

My experience with AI searches is that they are frequently incorrect. IME anyway. I would consult with GenY hitch directly. You'll likely get more reliable data.

Not strange at all since he's using an Offset to the rear gooseball hitch (accordingto provided picture above). The offset puts all the trailer weight directly over the axle, instead of it being couple of inches ahead of the axle which then would put a portion onto the front axle too. Not something I agree with but people do it.
