I am attending a State Rally and getting a bearing repack done by https://performancetrailerbraking.com/ Folks seem to like thier work.

Now before folks jump on the DIY option this is the first repack on my new axles and I want the breaks set up correctly and everything inspected. They include a complete suspension inspection and wet bolt greasing as part of the deal. I am also getting old with a bad back.

They offer the Hub Saver at a $40 per axle option. Its supposed to keep the hub on if the outer bearing race fails. In my 50 years of travel I have never had a catastrophic bearing failure. Now when I was a kid Dad lost a bearing on his boat trailer coming back from Florida to Illinois. The Hub Saver seems like an expensive oversize washer, but maybe the holes are needed for proper lubrication of the front bearing. Thoughts

So anyone using them and thoughts if this is a worth while investment?

Thanks

IMO, it could work from watching the demo, but I guess you have to decide how likely you are to have your bearings fail to the point you'll lose your wheel. It does happen, infrequently for sure, but it's your decision if you think the warm fuzzies are worth $80. :) I wouldn't spend the money, but I'm a cheapskate too. :)

I'm of the same opinion. Save your money. If the hub is correctly installed and maintained, it will not come off during travel. Hubs that fall off were not correctly maintained in 99.9% of the cases.

Interesting product, suppose if a catastrophic bearing issue were to take place, it certainly looks to keep the hub on the axle.

My experience with hub seperation has been due to cotter pin loss due to breakage or bad install and the nut worked off the spindle. Nothing is going to save a hub from coming off in that scenario.

Hopefully neither of those ever happen to either of us.

Happy Trails.

I just bought a pair today at the Central FL GD Rally. I figured why not. I keep my bearing greased and don't expect a hub failure. But I didn't expect a frame crack either. So..... $80 of maybe some peace of mind.

You only have yourself (and significant other) to answer to . . . . if it will give you peace of mind, and you are not financially fanatical about "dimes", then go for it!

I think no matter the maintenance regiment, I think all these bearings from China all come apart. We change bearings, hubs and seal every 3 months on our race car trailer. we use only use Dexter hubs, Timken Bearings, National Seals with Lucas grease. Hubs adjusted before every trip and a few times lost a hub. We just got our RV and the dealer is installing These Hub Savers and it money well spent IMO

Great question I came across on the net.We are new the the RV world but not trailering. The dealer we just bought from put these on so we are excited that we have peace of mind. I also informed AllState we had these to inquire about any discounts for added security. Of course they said no, but at least my conscious is clear my tire won't kill someone.

Maybe I have just been lucky then. I've pulled several travel trailers, boats, and utility trailers, but never had a bearing failure let alone lost a hub. The only situations that I have personally witnessed where a hub was lost, I can attest (as well as the owner) the failures were due to improper maintenance.

But given that you likely keep up on proper maintenance and have still experienced lost hubs, then perhaps luck plays a bigger role than I realized. If I lost one hub/wheel, I would immediately consider hub savers a good investment too.

I thought I would update this. I did not get the hubsaver, but we did find a greased brake backing plate and brake assembly.
This was from the factory. Dexter dealer sent me a new complete backing plate with break assembly gratis. Now I will wait for spring and do it myself

Had Hubsavers installed while at the NWFL rally this past Nov while Performance(Wandering Bear) was doing a repack. To me it was worth the $80 for the peace of mind. I am meticulous about maintenance probably to the point of overkill. Best case it saves me one day worst case I have wasted $80 on less practical things.

Seems weird to me. A person designs a product to keep the wheel hubs from coming off. I would suggest that he invests the time in learning how to install wheel bearings. He either has some really bad luck or does not know how to service/adjust wheel bearings. Too many failures for one person.

What's the statement? A fool and his money...... I might be a fool, but I will not waste my money on this product.
