We are just getting ready to embark on full time living in our brand new Grand Design Reflection 5th wheel. We purchased a memory foam topper for our bed. We did this in our previous travel trailer and it made the bed very comfy. This time it has not done the trick. The topper is 4". Was thinking of adding another topper.

Has anybody done this or have any suggestions?

Lynda

Thanks for the suggestion. We've thought about that but we are concerned about the weight of a new mattress may put us over and we've heard mattresses are extremely hard to get in the rig. Some people have actually cut them in half in order to get them in the rig. Not wanting to take that on right now.

We put a Sleep Number mattress in. Actually lighter that the stock mattress and MUCH more comfortable. We’d tried a 4” topper on the stock mattress for a few months then gave up on that. YMMV!

We also tried a topper, it was ok at first, then the mattress had to go. We went with a 9" memory foam mattress from Amazon, very comfy.

At home, we've been sleeping on a sleep number for years. We tried toppers, and they were not comfortable for long term.

So, the first thing we bought was a sleep number for the RV.

IMHO, it's the only way to go. [emoji16]

Near the top right corner of this page is a white rectangular box. Type in "mattress" and then click the magnifying glass icon. You'll be rewarded with page after page of related threads. Grab a cup of coffee...there's a lot of reading to do!

Hope this helps.

We tried a topper on the factory mattress. Worked for a bit but then it just kept getting worse and worse. I would put the money towards a new decent mattress myself.

X2^^. Adding toppers is just stacking money on top of a crappy mattress. We replaced ours with a Tuft & Needle and absolutely love it. Others have done everything from Sleep Number mattresses to "you name it."

When we replaced ours I decided to cut it in half to see how the stock ones are made. Here’s inside it.

We tried the 4 inch topper band aid, that did not last long at all. Before our first extended trip we bought a regular house hold mattress that did not have the fluffy extended tops on it and added the memory foam on top. Works great. It's been about 5 years and the mattress was not top quality so We'll likely replace it this summer with a memory foam mattress

We replaced our 'Black Label' mattress with a Brentwood 11" gel foam mattress from Amazon.... made in USA. Heavier than stock mattress but more much more comfortable. They can put fancy labels on the junk mattress and it's still junk. One warning on these foam mattress when they are cold they are HARD & COLD, so they need to be warmed up before you crawl in bed. BTW it comes in a box compressed, so easy to install. I would buy again.

Tried the memory foam topper over the stock mattress...nope! Bought a Kirkland Stearns & Foster at Costco and I can walk straight again. Sold the stock one to a work friend for their 9 year-old to use. I think our new mattress weighs in at 130 lbs. Was no problem for us to get it in and set up (of course BF did the majority of the heavy lifting so easy for me to say).

+1 on the Select Comfort Sleep Number mattress. We've been sleeping on one since the day we moved into it. Just put a comforter down to protect it from the hinges. That's what we used the factory bedspread for.

Sleep Number all the way, a little pricey, yes, but what price do you put on your "goods night sleep"? That is our suggestion. Especially so since you will be full timing. There are plenty of ways to check expenses but for us a great nights sleep was not one of them.
Good luck with your search.

We bought a sleep number and it has a pillow top to it. We love it.
