For years I have used a laptop in my RV. I have been part 6 months at my son's farm. My laptop receives a good 5 bar Wi-Fi signal. A few days ago I got a chrome book with the intention of replacing my Old laptop With the chrome book. The problem is while my laptop sees a strong Wi-Fi signal my chrome book sees a week Wi-Fi signal. The laptop and the chrome book on the same kitchen table side-by-side. I suspect the Wi-Fi antenna on the chrome book is not as efficient as the laptops Wi-Fi antenna.

Is there an external USB Wi-Fi antenna that works well with the chrome book???? All suggestions are welcome

That's interesting. My Chromebook gets a very strong wifi signal. But I don't think you'll be able to upgrade the wifi antenna in your Chromebook easily. I'd suggest a repeater. We use a travel router which supplies all of the devices in our coach. GL.iNet has more powerful routers (look at the Beryl) if you want to add things like VPN.

Before purchasing and adding an external WIFI adapter you could try tweeking your Network Adapter settings. I am not familiar with Chrome Books and their OS, but, there usually are some Network Adapter settings you can tweek to improve performance of your WIFI connection.

If you have them, you might want to look at adjusting your network adapter settings like Wireless Mode, Channel, Prefered Band, and Transmit Power. Its possible that you might be on a heavily used channel that could be interfering with your connection due to traffic from others. Then, sometimes, using 2.4ghz can have a stronger connect rate than 5ghz. We tend to set our channel to less traffic and prefered band to 5ghz and our wireless mode to dual band a/b/g and 802.11ax.

Would checkout your settings before trying to replace your internal (built in) adapter. Usually the internal adapter performance is better than the aftermarket USB adapters IMO.

Update: There is a free tool called Netspot that can be download that supposedly works with Chrome OS too. It can tell you signal strength, channel, band and other users who may be in the area close to your WIFI. I use it when configuring my WIFI adapter for best performance.

Happy Trails.
