Just a little twisty Action Today....

I've escorted full size tractor trailers through it. Every once in a while, a tractor trailer driver gets bad info and sees it as a shortcut to get to wherever he/she is going. Most of us locals will get in front of the tractor trailer (there's no place for them to turn around up there once they get on it) and stay a turn or maybe two ahead of them, warning oncoming traffic to stop and get over. You should see the look on some of their faces when they are pulled over because we've waved them down, and all of a sudden, a few seconds later a full size tractor trailer comes around the corner.

Years ago, we did some work out of one of parks below Cheoah Dam (Harrison Ford in The Fugitive). I don't remember the details, but we had to take a tractor trailer down and back up the tail of the dragon a few times. I wasn't the driver, but he said he would rather be on a bike than in the truck.

It is beautiful country around there for sure!

I'm in N Ga. and run the Dragon quite often. I started out with a Honda 90 years ago. I have a n 07 Royal Star Venture which is my 3rd one of the Yamaha"s. I have hosted many ride ins with the Venturers club but am getting to the point where my legs and back are about to get to me. It is harder to raise the 850 lbs. off the sidestand, and I would hate to hurt my wife if I were to drop it. I haven't listed it and the trailer for sale yet but am getting closer. I hate it OLD age sux but still on top of the ground is good. Keep on keeping on up there in Murville, & mabe one day on our way to the Smokies we can get with you for a cuppa Joe!

I had an '03 Suzuki Intruder and an '06 Councours 1000. I sold both and was about to quit riding because they were getting too heavy to be any fun. I bought a Honda NC750X on a whim and it's brought the joy of riding back. I rode it on the Dragon last year.

(edit) And I just noticed! My avatar is me and the Concours on the Dragon in '09.

Lighter weight bikes definitely excel on places with lots of tight and twisty corners, and Deal's Gap is a classic example of that. I've been riding sport bikes since the early 2000s, both on the street and on the track as an Instructor with Sportbike Track Time. Since I've gotten older, I still really like the sport type bikes, but wanted more of a sport-touring bike.....and not a heavy one in the 600+ lbs category. When Suzuki came out with the bike I have pictured in an earlier post, the GSX-S1000GT+, it checked all the boxes for me. It's weight (496 lbs), Electronic Cruise Control, 3 riding modes, Traction control, Quick-shifter, ABS, and a large (6") display with all the function controls on the left control pod. That bike has made motorcycling a lot of fun for me again and it was a great choice for exactly what I was looking for.

The good Lord told me, when I was a teenager, never, ever get on anything with two wheels with a motor again. I have obeyed.

My Dad pretty much told me the same thing. He also told me that as long as I lived in his house, I would never own a motorcycle. Well, at the start of my senior year of high school, the Nazarene church that we went to got a new preacher. They had a boy my age (both seniors that year). He had spent the entire summer out in Kansas (where they were from) working on a ranch/farm and came riding into town on a brand new Honda 350, the day before school start for our senior year. I was just in awe, and wanted a motorcycle really bad. I kept after my Dad and finally, I told him one day............

"How bad can they be? Even the preacher's son has one!" Two weeks later I got my first motorcycle! That was 1971 and I'm still riding to this very day. The one I have now, I bought in March last year and put 4000 miles on it before winter set in.
