We started from Albuquerque NM. While we were in Albuquerque we were given a tour of Kirkland AFB by a friend, a great visit. On our way to Lawton OK we stopped over in Amarillo for a few days, Cadillac Ranch, The Big Texan Steak House and Palo Duro Canyon.
Now in Lawton OK, home of Fort Sill Army and Marine Corps Field Artillery Base and Training. We are staying at The Peak RV Park beside Lake Lawtonka. We were greeted this morning with the sounds of artillery fire from Ft Sill. We are looking forward to touring the area and have already learned a lot, there is a lot of history here.
Fort Sill was first laid out by Gen Philip Sheridan to protect the surrounding areas of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas during the Indian Wars @ 1869. At that time it was known as Camp Wichita and later named by Sheridan as Fort Sill, after a friend and fellow graduate of West Point, Gen Joshua Sill, killed in the Civil War.
Many of the Indian Nation Tribes, Apache and Comanche, were relocated here to Fort Sill. An Apache and Comanche Indian Cemetery is located on Fort Sill and contains the graves of Geronimo, Quanah Parker and Ten Bears. We can visit the graves and pay our respects to the Chiefs of these great Indian nations by getting a visitors pass at Fort Sill and also visit the Ft Sill Museum.
Other places on our list to visit are, The Holy City, Museum of the Great Plains, Comanche National Museum & Culture Center and Medicine Park Aquarium.
Learning history in every place we stay,
