Location

Data mining at its best!

IMO.... The search tools just want to gather as much info as they can - some for the good (help find things near you), and some for the bad (feed their corporate monkeys).

There is nothing good about any of our "Devises" asking for location info. I always decline - now. I accepted once and got bombarded with (well, a lot of) adds based on somewhat local vendors and my past sites visited (Walmart, Target..... and on and on

The moderators weren't filled in on this upcoming change. I was suprised to get it as well. I close it , my browser is set to not share location unless I approve it

Would agree.....but..... we who leave and use our GPS (location) on our phones and have navigation built into our vehicles infotainment systems are already giving our location away.

One can turn off their phone location (I do too!)... but the nav, unless disconnected electronically, really cant be turned off. Wont even go into (future AI) facial recognition being setup around the world... Might have to start using maps again - until facial recognition is in place.... 😉

P.S. Speaking of technology, it drives me bat crap crazy everytime my wife uses google voice, or my son uses Alexa, to do things like find directions, change channels, etc.. I always say....let your fingers do the talking! Caveat: unless behind the wheel of a moving vehicle, then Im cool with it for sure!

DW and two of my adult sons (why give VZ any more $$$) are still on my legacy plan. As long as the boys pay me $10/month I'm good with that. But the phones are listening. When they are talking about 'pick a subject that I have absolutely no involvement or interest in' and it is only a conversation, within an hour I start getting email solicitations for related products. Unreal.

Yeah, the AI thing using peoples voices is going to be an issue, but I do use Google voice sometimes, and we have an Alexa in the house. My one grandson can't get enough of it, as they don't have one.

One of the sites I use is RV Trip Wizard which tracks your trip plan locations and sends it up to RVLife. Last year when we were stuck at Glacier, I had to revise our 70 day itinerary quite a bit and cancel a number of stops while extending others. I figured the easiest thing was to copy the trip and revise the copied version but I put the date a year out on the original so it wouldn't keep spamming me with reminders for stays which I could no longer keep. I left campground reviews for the places we stayed as we moved along. Fast forward to a year later (to the day) and I start getting email reminders from RFLife to leave reviews for places that I had already left reviews on. Worked with their tech staff but in the end I figured out it was based upon the duplicate trip plan I had created and the date change to a future year.

I turned off location completely on my laptop and this website is constantly asking now to "make sure location settings are turned on". I hit dismiss and it pops right back up again. Hopefully there will be a fix for this.

Today my iPad started asking me to use my location in everything I click on. Never did this before.
I'm not sure what is being reported here.

Is it an iPad thing or this website?

"...everything I click on..." - does that mean all websites/apps on the iPad or just this one?

What browser are you using? If Safari, what are the Location Services set to?

My Safari settings are set "Never". And I am not getting any location requests on this website.

Quick moderator comment: all the sidebar talk about who is tracking what.... etc. isn't in keeping with this OP's original request. I know we drift a lot, but... just sayin'.....

I believe it is this website. It is the only website that I am having issues with. I have this issue on my Windows laptop and my Android tablet. I am using DuckDuckGo on my laptop and Brave on my tablet.

Edit: I just logged into IRV2 and I had the same issue.

IRV2 ask when you first open, after that you can open anything and it doesn’t ask again. On here it asks every time you open something. No other sit does this.

I'm using Firefox on a Mac and location services are completely off. No requests so far.

I am running on a MacBook with Safari. If I turn on location services for Safari then this site will ask me every time I select another post if I want to share my location. I have a choice of yes, no and remember my answer (yes or no) for 1 day.

I usually do not allow location sharing and when I select that this site does not ask for my location (nor does any other site).

So I would say the key is to turn off location sharing in your settings on your computer for whatever browser you are using.

Was never asked for location today. Maybe it was a glitch or set in error??
I toggled my location services off and on a few times and got consistent results. No questions with location services turned off, always got asked if I turned them on.

Whatever - hopefully the problem gets cleared up.
