Max safe speed to tow??

Here in 55california, I'll do 62 on the interstate. Out of state it's 65. Living in the hills there is a lot of two lane-I do 55-60 & watch out for the rv's & trucks taking their half out of the middle

I drive 65 on interstates, less around the cities depending on speed limits and traffic. I find 65 puts me at about the same speed as the majority of the trucks so I normally just ride in the right lane. Running 68 or 70 is plenty comfortable for the truck and trailer, but I find I am constantly changing lanes to get around trucks yet I am still going slower than most other vehicles so changing into the passing lane can be a pain in the neck.

I'm with, what looks like maybe the majority of the folks here....65-68 in normal conditions like lite to medium traffic, no precip or fog, etc. When we were out west a few years back and a few of the areas had 80 for the speed limit, I did lock it on 70 mph for part of the trip. I had no desire to bump it up to 80, even though the traffic was lite and the skies were sunny. Going down the road with my rig means I'm between 28,000 and 29,000 lbs......so a max of 70 seems good for me.

I have found that my trailer/truck combo likes 67-68 mph, any faster and my mpg goes down quickly. With that speed, I blend in nicely with the truckers.

My setup tips the scale at 44,000lbs. I have many commercial rigs that top out at 80,000lbs leave me in the dust all the time. Our truck and trailer weights are almost identical so the 5th wheel does not push the Volvo down the road like it would a pickup. I am running disk brakes on both truck and camper so stopping is very quick and straight. I see 3/4 ton pickups pulling the same 5th wheel fly by me also. To each their own.

My tires are speed rated to 75 mph, so set the cruise control to 70. I will bump to 72 to get around semis more quickly. I'm not going to be that guy who sits in the left lane taking a few miles to pass. My fuel mileage doesn't get much better unless I'm around 60.

We have a 22MLE trailer and an F250 tow truck. While I know that the paperwork states a safe max tow speed of 55.... not sure that is going to be optimal out West this summer. Thus, what is a reasonable, safe speed to pull this trailer? Those small wheels do concern me...
We have the same set-up....and generally we're at 65-70 mph and feel pretty comfortable most of the time. Head winds and the terrain can take their toll on mpg of course. Might have to re-visit our weight distribution hitch though. Got the Anderson w/chains, but not sure if it's doing the job 100%
of the time.....

I cruise at 60mph. Not because I want to, but it's about all a 95 F250 5.8/E4OD can muster. Passes are worse. Building an engine which should allow me to keep up with all you guys.

I like 67 mph with my fiver. I also lock out some gears so the diesel engine turns at about 2,000 rpm. The transmission programing from Ford has the engine lugging even in tow/haul mode.

65mph is my cruising speed. I don't like going over 70; I can, i have, but it isn't my sweet spot. So, for me, 65 is safe. Trucking schools use to teach that once over 63mph you are no longer in control - the truck is; not sure what modern driving schools teach; technology, and drivability have come a long way.

On today's interstates/expressways/speedways/etc., you know, the ones with speed limits of 70+, I consider anything UNDER to 61mph to be UNSAFE.

Lately I find in metro areas going significantly slower than most traffic is even more of a hazard in that folks come up on them too fast and end up aggressively braking. So at slow speeds you become a hazard if traveling too slow.

My biggest pet-peeve about driving on interstates are the bozos who decide that even with little to no traffic they have to drive in the middle lanes of highways with 3+ lanes. And those bozos are barely doing the speed limit many times (especially the RVers). Trucks do it but waaaayyy to many RVers do it. While I can understand staying out of the right hand travel lane when many exits/entrances are close together, I just don't get it when there is clear traffic and few on/off ramps. I consider those people unsafe but mainly poor drivers.
FYI It is called the speed LIMIT for a reason, It is NEVER legal to exceed it.
However you can get a ticket under the speed limit if conditions are such that a resonable and prudent person should go even slower
