Momentum 385TH few issues

We have just returned from 5 months in our new toy hauler. Over all it was great, but found a few issues.

We have noticed that other Momentum's on the road have 3 axels, our's has 2 8k lbs. axels. Why the change? Do we need to be concerned?

Is there a possible brake adjustment? When we have our brake controller set all the way up (9.5) we still have to mash on the brakes fairly good to actually stop. In our last 5th wheel which was about 4k lbs. lighter we could actually stop using the trailer brakes only set at 7.5.

Our kitchen island faucet has terrible pressure, other areas when the water pressure is decent there isn't a water pressure issues, but the kitchen faucet pressure stinks.

Our Furrion DV1200 will not play DVD's, CD's or USB. We have reset it a few times as the bluetooth stopped working as well, but once we reset it, it will work again for a while...However we have had to reset it three times in 5 months.

Our beautiful leather couch / recliners have two spots where the stitching has given way as well as one whole on the back of the recliner (which was there from day one when we purchased it). You can tell that these two spots just didn't have enough material pulled in where the stitching was.

We live 67 miles one way from the closest dealership and 9 out of 10 times the laborers aren't very good. Is all of this stuff that we can work on together rather than taking it to a dealership?

Man, I hate to hear these kinds of things.
Sounds like you have a lot of the basic issues that have been all over this forum ...
Including the wonderful dealer service.

So far I only have the bad island water pressure (found on numerous model over all years) and bad Furrion DV-3100.
Not looking forward to the others.

Welcome to the Forum but sorry to hear of your issues. I suggest that you call GD Customer Service at 574.825.9679 and discuss your options.

As far a 3 axle vs 2 axle Momentum, that was a change implemented last fall to be more to be competitive I believe with other manufacturers offerings. I know it's been posted on here that some owners purchased a Momentum specifically because it was 2 axles instead of 3. It's not a question of load on the axles as I don't think that the CCC was changed. You can call Nate Goldenburg, the Product Manager for the Momentum line at 574.825.8000 and he could discuss the change in detail with you.

I am a 355 Th owner and originally never looked at GD because of the 2 axle issue. I had to special order my KZ back in 06 to get three axles. It was consider overkill back then.
You should have 17.5 tires and 8000 lb axles , very expensive and new to the RV industry.
Most of the 3 axle TH have 6 or 7 K axles and 15 or 16 inch tires. Its cheaper.
You have the advantage of buying a true commercial HD truck tire in the 17.5 size and don't have to pay the price of upgrading the rims or axles. I understand that GD has gone back to 3 axle because of losing market share. There is advantage of 17.5 tires with 125 PSI rims.
On the brakes some owners have had issues with grease seals going bad. I have not taken mine apart yet but will because of other posters experience .
I cannot comment on water pressure, DVD or stitching. New owner

For me it's all about the weight. My 385 weighs in at 20,000+lbs. total trailer weight (loaded) with around 17,000 lbs. on the axles. If I had only two 8,000 lbs axles I would be over weight on the axles, brakes, bearings, etc.

If you have not weighed at a "CAT" scale yet you probably should just to know where you are.


Also, our Furion DVD screws up constantly too. Will do something about it one of these days.

Aren't you still over weight as the 385TH GVWR is listed at 19500#. You're making the assumption that the number of axles and their rating is the limiting factor to load carrying and GVWR where clearly it's not.

Actually I'm not making that assumption... axles are just one of the factors. But for me, my truck, hitch, axles, tires are all within ratings. The only "number" that is exceeded is the somewhat arbitrary 19,500 they stamp on the side. The only thing left is the frame and I'm sure it has at least a 20% margin.

I wish I was under that 19,500 number but it just isn't gunna happen. I am as trim as I can get for a Toy Hauler with my needs.

I'm merely pointing out that for this big of a rig the change to three axles was good - at least for me, and not necessarily the cheaper route for GD.

When I spoke with Bill, he told me that the change to three axles was due to perception only - people had a hard time understanding how you could have a trailer with a 19500 weight with only 16000 pounds worth of axles.

Thank you everyone for your comments. Janice thank you for getting back to me. I have never "posted" anything before, so I wasn't sure how to send a private message, but I was able to get a hold of Mr. Weaver from the phone number you provided. Mr. Weaver was great and very helpful! Our kitchen faucet is being replaced, Same with our furious DV1200. Mr. Weaver let me know what I need to do to start the process for the couch. He also let me know to look on page 9 for the brake question. The big one, he let us know the axle change was due to peoples lack of knowledge and perception...We are very happy with our tandem axles and would rather tandem and not triple axles. All in all our questions have been addressed and are very pleased with our purchase! We wish Grand Design continued success! Thank You, The Wilson's
