We aren't thrilled with the queen murphy bed as installed by Grand Design. We have heard that there are very good replacement beds on the market. What experiences have some of you had and do you recommend any specific manufacturers?

You are quite limited to what you can do if you want something that can still fold to put the bed away
Maybe a small topper that won’t interfere with the operation of the bed
Or leave the bed out all the time with a real mattress on it
One reason I avoided a Murphy

Thank you for our thoughts.

we put a 4" Sealy topper on ours. It was on sale at Kohls and much better than the initial generic 4" topper we bought. Made a huge difference for us. Bed still folds with out issue.

Looking for locking mechanism for Murphy bed on an MKE 17

We just purchased an 8 in memory foam mattress ( Queen RVsize)
Although it doesn’t fold it still closes okay.
I would like to add another locking mechanism on the left side to help ensure that it stays locked when travelling

Does anyone know where to obtain a similar locking set up ?

Hi Bandot,
Were you able to find another lock? We too have a 8" mattress in our 17MKE. I'm going to contact GD parts and see if they have one. Been searching and only find chrome ones.

Swapped our Murphy bed mattress for a Brooklyn Dreamfoam Essential. 8” short queen. Yes it’s heavier than the one that came with our AIM. And yes it’s not hindged, but it folds enough to fit into the 15RB’s cubby. To avoid stressing the mattress we leave it down when traveling or between trips , and fold it away during the day at the campsite to reclaim our interior space. There’s no indication that folding it away is damaging the mattress. It’s quite comfortable and has worked out well for us. Don’t be discouraged when it’s suggested that options are limited. There is more available than you might think.

We just bought a 17MKE with Murphy bed (2 days ago) but we'd bought a short-queen 10" Endy the year before. I didn't want to lose the endy so we swapped with our trade and the MKE closed no problem. I mean there's nothing on the bed except the nice white cover endy ships them with. Now the true test will come when we go to make up the bed with our normal queen sized stuff (mattress protection, fitted sheet, two thin furry blankets, flat sheet and bed spread cause it's dog proof) We may have to lose layers or put them on when we go to bed.

What I did with my other trailer was stuff four thick chair pads between the headboard and the mattress to extend the short queen about 3 inches. It was just enough so DH's feet didn't hang off.

But alas, we shall see when the time comes. It maybe the mattress goes in mostly neked each time and we make the bed up
