We have a 2023 Imagine XLS 17 MKE, Want to replace the mattress on the murphy bed. Just want to know if you can put a normal mattress in that area & still fold up. The mattress has a fold in it. plus its not very thick. Every time you turn over you fall in the crease. We have a 3" topper on it at this point in time. Just wanted to know from you folks what mattress you would buy to replace the current one.
Thanks
Jeff

First off, it looks like you're new here, welcome to the forum. Not sure what you mean by "normal mattress," but yes, a memory foam-type mattress that is not too thick should work fine. I totally agree that the stock mattresses are unsatisfactory.

If it is sized right, you should be ok.

The mattress on the Murphy style beds are 60 X 72 inches, I believe.

we are looking into the same thing for our 16bl. ours is 60x74 i believe that is a short queen. hoping an 8 inch memory firm will work.

We have a 17MKE. One of the first things we did was get rid of the terrible stock mattress. We bought a Sleepy's Snug 8" queen mattress from Mattress Firm online. https://www.mattressfirm.com/snug-8-firm-memory-foam-mattress/5637148071.p?variantid=5637158706 They go on sale fairly often and they can be found in their clearance center online too. Any 8" queen size memory foam mattress should fit but it will be a little tighter going up and weighs more. Many people have used a second latch on the bed frame to make it more secure since there is more weight. We haven't done that and haven't had any problems (yet). A lot of people also like the Zinus mattress.

i have had my 24 17 MKE for about a month, the mattress is already shot. i have had a topper from the beginning. They do make Hybrid mattresses that have coil springs and memory foam and they will make the fold wherever you want it. they are 9" thick which is the same as my original mattress with the topper. They are about 1k but i am going to do it, Tried a memory foam mattress at home once and returned it.

Thank you for the information. We also have a 17 MKE that needs a better Murphy bed mattress. I found a company called Tochta that does custom hinged mattresses. Just wondering if anyone has had experience with them. You can select the various depths, and I was wondering about weight for the single mechanism that holds the bed in the up position. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I went with the advice to buy the 8” sleepy snug from mattress firm. I use my 3” topper. Been on it daily since April. Best move I made. 500$ and complete comfort. Folds up easily. I did buy another lock from Amazon for the other side.

Thanks for the reply. Is the sleepy snug heavy? Also, do you have any issues with the folding breaking down the mattress since it's not hinged?

it is a bit heavier, not hard to put up at all. the salesman said it it warrantied against any sagging creasing for 5 years including folding it up. it begins life packed into a box and comes right out of it. i sleep on it every night as i live in my trailer. best mattress i've had.

We just bought our MKE and the first thing we did was exchange the mattress from our old unit to this one. It is a 10" thick short-queen new last year from Endy. Yes it is heavy so we will get a second locking mechanism but there was no problem putting it up with a mattress cover, fitted sheet, pillows, and bedspread. With the short queen, we stuff four chair seat pillows at the head of it then remove them when we fold it up which effectively makes it into a queen so feet don't dangle off:rolleyes:

Do you find the 10" thickness to be ok in the Murphy Bed area? I'm trying to decide between 8 or 10" thickness. Thanks!

To be fair we've been sleeping on the 10" foam mattresses at home so a long time. We both like a firm mattress. With an 8" though you could always add a topper if you like and maybe it will weight less than the 10"

For all readers:
Tochta 8" worked for us, dont worry about getting exact length, with a little pushing you can get a full size to close.
Factory mattress is a "show piece" only...

We replaced ours with this tri-fold memory foam mattress. One of the folds is where the fold in the Murphy bed is, so it works great.

Then we put this topper on to get a little more thickness and cover up the fold creases. We got the short queen size, but if I had it to do over, I'd get the full queen size since I'd rather have the topper too long than too short. But we don't really notice the 3" difference.

The whole thing is very comfortable and fits fine without any added pressure on the latch.
