New mattress

Considering replacing the manufactured (king) mattress that came with our new camper. The one I'm thinking about getting is heaver (this is one of the only complaints on the reviews). I'm concerned about how hard it will be to lift the mattress to gain access under the bed to the storage area and will the mechanism Grand Design uses to hold the mattress in the up position hold with a heaver mattress.

Anyone have any experience with these issues? I'm guessing most everyone would have replaced the manufacture mattress at some point, especially if your full time RV'ing.

Thanks Again
Tom

I have a residential queen foam mattress and the struts are not strong enough to hold the bed up.

Cent frum my sell phone so pleeze excuse my spelling and grahmar.

We replaced the original with a residential gel mattress as soon as we got ours and the mattress is wonderful. Yes, it is several lbs. heavier and the stock struts do not hold it up but since we rarely access the area under the bed, we just deal with the minor issue. Some (Rob and Cate as an example) have replaced stock struts with heavier ones and this works but I seem to recall recently where he had some issues with the stronger struts pulling loose at the mounting points but as usual, Rob, re-engineered that too to higher and better standards !

We're going to add a memory foam topper. This will add 30-40 lbs. I was also worried about the additional weight. We plan to use the area under the bed. We may have to look at the heavier struts also.

See this other thread and the link in it to a previous discussion for details and part numbers.
BTW, the new stronger pivots are holding up just fine.

The additional memory will get you some comfort but in our case, eventually the mattress gets compressed and the memory foam doesn't help. We replaced it with an 8" cool gel foam mattress which we liked so much, we bought another for at home. The new mattress is light enough that the OEM struts work fine.

Thanks Dave, I'll check it out.

Thanks for all the comments. I might just get a 3 inch topper and not a full mattress, this will cut down on the weight and maybe the struts will still work. I to am planning on using the storage area under the bed. Haven't decided yet. The mattress or topper I'm thinking about getting is made by Habitat Furnishings (natural latex mattresses). Anyone have experience with Latex mattresses? They look nice on line but are not cheap. $$$$
Dave...were did you get your 8 inch cool gel foam mattress from? I'm 6'4" and 245 lbs., concerned how the mattress will hold up over time.

We just had a new mattress delivered yesterday. The combination of the 5" memory foam topper and the original "Black Label" futon (that's what the mattress expert called it when he saw it) piece of junk was already heavy enough that the struts wouldn't hold up the foot of the bed. The 12" cool gel/memory foam/support foam mattress (with full cover and quilted topping) that came in the door yesterday is only a couple of pounds heavier than the previous combo and we're willing to live with having to use one hand to old the end of the bed up to get to the storage area underneath. There aren't words to describe how well we slept last night... we just have to be a bit more careful sitting up under bed slide getting out of bed.

Second chance Rob, would you be willing to share the info on your new bed sounds, like a good one!!

We purchased our new mattress through:

https://temeculamattress.com/Cool_Gel_Memory_Foam.html

They are made somewhere nearby Temecula, CA, but my step-son got a similar mattress from Costco (and I paid a similar price to the Costco price). Bed In A Box has a couple of models that are comparable, as well. I would suspect that there are regional "assemblers" of this foam technology in many parts of the country. I hope this helps.
