We picked up a new 4 month old puppy 2 1/2 weeks before our big 4000 mile trip through Idaho,Montana & Wyoming. I know, call us crazy but if I didn’t get him then he would have been gone when we returned from our trip. We just got back and he did really well (a little carsick the first week) but eventually got over it. We had purchased a dog yard for him but really didn’t use it much since we were only in one place about 4 nights at a time. Kept him in crate at night down in living room and I needed to get up in the night to let him go potty. (12,3, 6 am)? Beau is an “Aussilier” - 1/2 Australian Shepard & his dad is Charles King Cavalier. He has more energy than we expected but it’s been awhile since we’ve had a puppy! He’s been a joy to us and love having him explore all the new sites with us. We bought a waggle for the trailer but didn’t use it much since we took him most places with us. Any recommendations on traveling with a new puppy. Thanks in advance for all your advice!

Our granddaughter is 2, she's fun to visit but I do NOT want more kids! And a 4 month old puppy would be about as much work. Right now I'm looking around my trailer at everything a puppy would chew up! I suppose if you get them young enough then they can get accustomed to traveling easier than an older dog. Our dog has trouble eating when we go on the road. Gets homesick. She will just refuse to eat for days sometimes, we have to get wet food or hamburger and force feed her. She gets over it after about a week. But it can be a very stressful week.

OMG this is too funny. We're 7K miles into a 67 day trip from NH to WY, MT and back to NC. DW sees an add last Saturday for an 8 week old Australian cattle dog puppy (they call them heelers for a reason - talk about energy!!!) that is just listed (yeah she was looking after we lost our last one a few months back but she didn't tell me while on this trip - secret with our daughter apparently:).

We were in Kentucky about 50 miles from the kennel on Friday. Moved on to Chattanooga and the listing went public Saturday. Monday we drove back to Kentucky and picked up the pup.

We bought a crate which he is in while driving and I bring that into the living area at night. I fold the larger rear seat down in the back and put the crate there and leave the door open - DW now sits in the back seat next to him and he is usually glued to her. Lots of toys of all kinds - he tries to chew everything but gets bored with a single toy after a short time. Plastic disposable water bottles are great - just peel the label off first. He really likes shoes and toes - both to chew on and too sleep on. I have more band aids on me than you could imagine.

We also bought a folding small fence which I place around the table/seating area so he can't chew the chair tie downs, electric cables for the seats, and furniture. When we are visiting our daughter, we bring it with us and he stays in there. Works well and he settles down quickly in the trailer - harder in daughter's house with two other dogs including a large German Shepherd puppy of 8 months.

4 month old is probably in teething range. Keep lots of different stuff for him/her to chew on or your furniture will be in shreds. Ice cubes are also a good option. We both temporarily sleep in the living area to be close to the pup and he is sleeping through the night after a 1am trip outside. Good luck!!!!

Congrats! Puppies are fun and tiring. What, no pictures? it's a tease to tell us and not ut up a pic! More energy... just wait... Aussies (even part Aussies too) are quite driven and energetic. You might get lucky and some of the Cavalier will calm it before the age of 10.. tha's how long it took one of our old Aussies to calm down.. Enjoy the new baby !

Spots to watch for teething are the corners of the kitchen island. Caught our current dogs teething on the corners when they were pups a few years ago.

New puppy

Yes, he has so much energy! We have 8 grandkids and last two are 18 month old twins - he’s as much work as them!! ? Sorry, I’m not sure how to post a pick of Beau. Just learning how to maneuver on this site!

Beau will sleep thru the night if I let him go potty around 10pm and his grate is next to me now in our bedroom at home.(Wakes up at 6:30 and then we let him sleep on the end of the bed) We almost got his brother too but wasn’t sure if we could handle two puppies!

Thank you Marcie & Gary! That’s so encouraging he’ll finally calm down around year 10! I hope more of his father begins to emerge in the next 6 months. ?

Funny - we were at a Music Fest back in July and this little guy came over and slept on my feet for about 20 minutes. The owner of the dog just shrugged and said that he must like you better. puppy feet.jpg

So is he yours now? is it a he? if so he is comfortable with his masculinity wearing such a bright pink collar

Well, I forgot about the collar - It is a she. I call almost all dogs a he for some reason, and no - not mine now. While I would not mind having another dog, my wife really has difficultly when they pass. We have cats, and she'll have the same issue. The owner had to take the dog out of the venue for some reason, then was allowed to bring her back. He was part of the road crew for the band that was playing at the time.

We are full-timers and our lab-mix was only in the stick house for 5 months. We were camping at least 3 or more nights each month for practice.
Walking a young dog will not tire them out. Just do it for training. For our lab; it's all about the "stick" or 'ball". We can tire him out a bit with those tools. Long walks off leash in remote place work too.

Bailey is 2 and a half now. His crate was given to someone else, because he didn't need it anymore.

It's all about training. NO BARK is very important.

We lost our miniature poodle last November one month shy of his 14th birthday. Went to Myrtle Beach for 5 weeks Jan/Feb and came home with two micro-Goldendoodles (got them on 2/4 at 8 weeks old)! Shells from the beach would have been a whole lot easier! Picture is from May at 6 months old.

This was the set up in the 380FL when we got the puppies. Three separate areas for them: sleep area, pee area, and play area. They couldn't be on the ground with other dogs due to the parvo virus until full vaccinated so had to pad train them while in the RV park.

Since they couldn't be on the ground (an RV park is essentially a dog park!), here is how they got around:
